Best practices for Wisconsin spring cleanup are... wait until mid-May before cutting/clearing last year's growth. Overwintering pollinators and invertebrates require protection from unpredictable Spring temperatures. We need to wait so these species can emerge strong from that all-important plant material in our yards and parks 🌿

Temperatures are starting to rise, and we know you’re eager to get outside and clean up your garden, but we encourage you to WAIT!

Waiting just a little longer to do your spring clean-up can help protect our little overwintering pollinators and invertebrates from the fluctuating temperatures of early spring.

So, you might be wondering, when’s the best time to tackle that spring clean-up?

Most sources say it’s best to wait until nighttime temperatures are consistently in the 50s. For us folks in Minnesota, that usually means around early to mid-May.

So, why not set those garden gloves down for now, take a deep breath, and daydream about all the beautiful native plants you want to add to your garden this spring? There’s plenty of time for gardening ahead! 🌼🌿

Beautiful winter weather, a gorgeous moon, and much-needed camaraderie. We couldn’t have asked for a better night for Glow on the River! So many thanks… for the small but mighty group of event visionaries/organizers, the many volunteers who made the night possible, and the monetary donations from all who attended that will go a long way in supporting our prairie work. Thank you to Menomonie Market Food Co-op for the generous donation of delicious hot cocoa and cookies, Volume One photographer Andrea Paulseth for capturing all of the fun and beauty, and The Eastside Hill Neighborhood for enduring support.

Residents of the Eastside Hill neighborhood teamed up to organize an evening of winter luminaries on Jan. 31, to benefit its neighboring landscapes. From 5-8pm at Boyd Park in Eau Claire, volunteers for “Glow on the River: A Winter Luminary Walk at Boyd Park” decorated the trails with...

This week, we were honored to receive the City of Eau Claire’s Sustainability Award for an organization.

Thank you to the entire Prairie Partners team, long-standing members and newcomers alike! We thank the Eastside Hill Neighborhood Association for unwavering support of the work, both funding and helping hands. Thank you to the City’s Parks and Forestry Division for an incredible working relationship and for entrusting us as stewards of the land.

We’ve worked with dozens of Upward Bound high school students from Eau Claire North and Memorial and UWEC service-learning college students; they’re integral to the success of Prairie Partners.

This award is really one for the entire community. We feel so fortunate to be able to bring people from all walks of life together to sit in the prairie on a warm afternoon, gazing at butterflies; to take family photos in a sea of black-eyed Susans; to watch the sunset as the dragonflies come in and the bats come out. We see community in every tree, patch of soil, wave on the river, every insect, animal… human animals and all others!

“That land is a community is the basic concept of ecology, but that land is to be loved and respected is an extension of ethics. That land yields a cultural harvest is a fact long known, but latterly often forgotten.”

Thank you, Aldo Leopold. We will never forget.

We thank Terri Noel, photographer and our neighbor in the Eastside Hill, for the gorgeous image that now serves as our cover photo. She visits the Boyd prairie nearly every day, which she describes as “almost a meditative experience where I slow down to look for photos that catch my eye.” She loves to go walking in different kinds of weather and lighting to see the prairie in all of its beautiful forms. Terri, we can’t thank you enough for the countless beautiful photos you’ve shared of this precious land! Your creativity, your artistry always inspire us! 🌻 🩷

Thank you, The Eastside Hill Neighborhood! Great before and after photos!!!
