VFW Post 6686 Embraces New Community Vision with Expanded Facilities and Family-Friendly Focus
Eatonton, GA — A change in leadership has sparked a fresh direction for Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6686, transforming it into a more welcoming, community-centered organization.
Under the leadership of Post Commander Brian Alliston, a 20-year Army Aviation veteran, the post has adopted a bold new vision: “to be a welcoming hub where veterans, the VFW, the VFW Auxiliary, and the entire community come together through family-friendly events to build strong connections and create a lasting, positive impact on our community.”
The renewed focus is already yielding results. In the past year, post membership has grown significantly. With the sale of its current location, Post 6686 is now actively searching for a larger property with more land to accommodate its expansion goals and increased activity.
“Our goal is to create a stronger presence in the community while remaining open to new ideas,” said Commander Alliston. “We want this to be a place where veterans feel at home and where families are welcome.”
Putnam County has one of the highest concentrations of veterans in Georgia, with veterans comprising over 9% of the local population. In response, VFW Post 6686 would like to partner with the county leadership to add a dedicated Veterans Service Officer to provide direct assistance to veterans and their families in Putnam County. This new role will help connect local veterans with benefits, resources, and support services.
A major part of the post’s vision includes a new game room inspired by the Global War on Terrorism veterans, designed specifically for younger veterans who enjoy gaming. Thanks to generous donations, the post has acquired PlayStations, a Nintendo Switch, and an Xbox. Officials say the space will serve as a safe, inviting environment where veterans can bring their children to play and socialize while connecting with fellow service members.
To further engage the community, the post plans to host local youth gaming tournaments with prizes that include college scholarship money. The new facility will also be open to the public and will feature weekly bingo nights.
In addition, Post 6686 has established a new nonprofit organization called the Lake Country Veterans Association. The group aims to support veterans who served but did not deploy overseas. Any veteran with an honorable discharge and a DD-214 is eligible to join for an annual fee of $45. Members will receive discounts at the post canteen and opportunities to volunteer alongside VFW members in community service projects.
The changes reflect a broader effort to grow membership, modernize the post’s appeal, and strengthen its role as a community anchor in the Lake Country area.
VFW Post 6686 continues to search for its new home and welcomes community support and ideas as it moves forward with its expanded mission.
