Archers of Ravenwood

Archers of Ravenwood Welcome to The Archers of Ravenwood! We represent an English Free Company in the mid-15th century.

We do local events, and get together as a group throughout the year. We teach archery at our events and hold daily Archery Tournaments. The Archers represent an English Free Company in approximately 1450 A.D. Medieval free companies usually formed from the out-of-work soldiers of the Hundred Years’ War. The Hundred Years War had numerous truces, treaties and cessation or abeyance of hostilities, o

ften resulting in leaving a very large number of professional soldiers at loose ends in France. These groups sometimes formed a “free company” for major looting expeditions, or traveled throughout Europe as permanent band of mercenaries. English longbowmen were greatly prized as mercenary soldiers, and often formed the backbone of the Free Company. The Archers present various aspects of Renaissance culture through public presentations of an English Free Company encampment. We host archery tournaments, open to all comers in garb and with their own equipment; teach archery to the public for a small fee, explaining the proper methods and use of equipment and technique; and provide demonstrations of period fletching techniques. Through teaching archery, the Archers became a self-supporting corporation, allowing us to expand our archery presentations to encompass other period presentations.

The Escondido Renaissance Faire will be here in a month, and the Archers will be there! Find our camp at the end of the battle field. You can take an archery lesson (be sure to check our teaching hours, we are closed the last hours of the day due to the Battle, Joust, and Archery Tournament, though we usually open after the Saturday Tournament for a small amount of time). You can also visit our camp and hear about the Battle of Agincourt and how archery won the day, or see a medieval craft or check out our armour display and even try on a piece or two.

We love sharing our love of Archery and 15th century history, come visit us!

We are gearing up for our next event, the Yuletide Medieval Festival, put on by Historic Event Productions! The first two weekends of December, don't miss it!

We will be teaching archery, presenting crafts of the era, showcasing the history of archery, as well as armor, weapons and clothing worn during 1450, and our Archery Tournaments!

We will have a special Longbow Only Tournament each Saturday! This competition will be medieval style, with targets being wood wreaths and wands. Winners will each win a Pacific Yew Longbow! Only wood longbows allowed, with wood arrows.
This Tournament will start at 6:30 pm December 7th and December 14th. You must sign up for this tournament by 5pm before the tournament. Practice & qualifying for the tournament will begin at 5:30pm. You must make 3 out of 6 arrows on the target to qualify.

Our regular tournaments will be at 4pm, with practice/qualifying beginning at 3:30pm, Saturday and Sunday (December 7th, 8th, 14th and 15th). You must make 3 out of 6 arrows on the target to qualify. You must have your own longbow or a recurve and wood arrows, take-down bows must have their metal parts hidden from view. No accessories allowed. Targets are traditional circular targets made of straw afixed to foam target butts. We might start a little early on the final Sunday, so be sure to be there by 3:30pm or earlier on that day.
Winners of the regular tournaments will win a Silver Eagle pin and will compete on the final Sunday for the Champion of Faire and a Gold Eagle pin.

Participants of both tournaments must be in attire appropriate for the Medieval festival (i.e. not modern clothing - any medieval, pirate, fantasy etc. attire will do). Range for both tournaments is approx. 20 yards.
