Happy New Year!
As you know, last year presented a bumpy ride. It began very well. January elections and our first presentation, by James Pollowitz' purchase and restoration of the Isaac Hobbs house in Eastport was well received.
But then the bottom fell out. Pam Beveridge, our most competent and hard working secretary, died unexpectedly, leaving us to sort out what and how we should proceed. As it turned out we elected another set of officers, they being: Kevin Raye, President, Ruth McInnes Vice President, Kathryn Lewis Secretary and Sandy Swanson Treasurer. Later, Sandy Swanson was replaced by Mary Weston, due to continuing illness.
The crafts shop did exceptionally well in 2023, due in large part to the many cruise ships that visited our fair city, and the auction also fared well. All seemed to happy in the new venue of the Port Authority's Welcome Center. Our plans for the Barracks include Pam Beveridge's idea of having a research room, and much of it is in place. We hope to have it ready in the spring and open by summer season. Stay tuned!
We closed out the year with a very well received presentation by Al Churchilll on Benedict Arnold. We certainly hope to bring more quality presentations forward in the coming year.
Thank you for your patience throughout last year. Stay with us as we look forward to the new year.

ISAAC HOBBS (1793-1853) MOVED TO EASTPORT AS A YOUNG MAN AND BUILT THIS HOUSE ABOUT 1815. INCIDENTALLY, THERE'S ANOTHER FAMOUS ISAAC HOBBS HOUSE, THIS ONE BUILT ABOUT 1749 IN WESTON, MASSACHUSETTS, BY ISAAC'S GREAT GRANDFATHER EBENEZER HOBBS AND NOW BEARING THE NAME OF EBENEZER'S SON, ISAAC HOBBS, O...

The year 2022 saw a continuation of efforts to restore the Barracks. Phase One, water aversion in the basement together with some electrical work, is now completed.
The lumber which had been stored in the building was brought up and salvaged; and is stored in the former genealogy room.
Several mold removal contractors were contacted, but we were advised to wait until spring to see if and how well the remediation works. We are happy to report that the mold is no longer the pressing problem we had, it having naturally receded when the source of moisture dried up, so our attention has turned to consideration of actual restoration of the building.
The crafts shop rates were changed from our 15 percent for workers and 30 percent for non workers. The shop had another very successful year. And, as usual, the auction was held out front over Old Home Week
We donated $1000 to the friends of the Eastport Cemetery and sent $1500 to the University of Massachusetts Press for subvention of Josh Smith’s latest book, “Making Maine,” which is the fifth in our series.
Officers for the year were: Kathryn Lewis, president, Kevin Raye Vice President, Pam Beveridige Secretary, Sandy Swanson Treasurer, Ruth McInnes, Clark Duff, John Melby, Joshua Smith and Sarah Talbot. In March, Sarah Talbot was replaced with Cheryl Beaton.
The ZOOM meetings have been well attended and will continue, but with Covid lifting, we have begun to think of having some public events. Already, we held an open house for the Barracks’ 200th birthday on August 20 and a salute to veterans on Veterans’ Day. More is planned at the Barracks and perhaps other kinds of events will be happening in the future. Stay tuned!
