We honor the extraordinary life and legacy of Claudette Colvin, a fearless daughter of the Civil Rights Movement and a true American hero.

Long before history would embrace the courage of others, Claudette Colvin, just a young girl, stood up to injustice with unshakable resolve. Her refusal to surrender her dignity helped ignite a movement that would forever change this nation. Her bravery was not just symbolic. It was costly, personal and profoundly transformative.

The Sarah Mae Flemming family recognizes Claudette Colvin as a fellow trailblazer. Claudette did not wait for permission to demand her humanity, she claimed it. Through quiet determination and extraordinary strength, she challenged a system designed to deny her worth and by doing so, she helped dismantle it.

May her legacy continue to inspire truth tellers, freedom fighters, and people everywhere who dare to believe that justice is worth standing for.

Today, we honor what would have been the 92nd birthday of Sarah Mae Flemming—a quiet warrior whose courage paved the way for a movement.

Before Rosa Parks, there was Sarah.
On June 22, 1954, this young Black woman from Columbia, South Carolina, dared to sit where dignity demanded, not where segregation dictated. Her bravery challenged an unjust system and helped lay the legal foundation for the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Though her name is often overlooked, her impact is undeniable.

May we never forget that history is moved not only by the loud voices, but by the brave hearts who spoke through their actions when the world wasn’t ready to listen.
