After applying and being approved as a new mentor, Charlie was matched with eight-year-old Alijah Perry. That early friendship, which began 12 years ago, has turned into a life-changing experience for them both and it still continues today.

Alijah went to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, MD. He recently graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA and a degree in Aviation Management.

Thanks to a cross-organizational partnership between Building African American Minds, Talbot County Public Schools, Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center, and Talbot Mentors, the program's inaugural year was a huge success.

EASTON — Talbot Mentors is partnering with the READ Alliance and Talbot County Public Schools to provide literacy tutoring for first and second grade students.

Join us for the Academy Art Museum’s 16th annual Juneteenth celebration on June 20 from 12-4p.m.

FREE and open to all, this year's celebration is themed around Easton’s historic Hill Community. Highlights will include live musical performances, a guided tour of the Hill with Yvonne Freeman, hands-on art activities, local food vendors, community partners, a special installation featuring artifacts from the future Freeman Annex & Hormel Research Center, a mural unveiling in partnership with Talbot Mentors, a teen creative writing showcase with Shore Lit, and an artist talk with Tawny Chatmon.

On May 21, we concluded our final Parent/Mentor training of the season in partnership with For All Seasons Behavioral Health and RCC. We are grateful to Lauren Weber for leading thoughtful discussions on important topics that help adults better support young people.

This fall, Lauren will return to continue the conversation around mental health and wellness, including understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and building resilience through Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs). We look forward to offering more opportunities for mentors and parents to learn practical strategies that strengthen relationships and support youth success.

🌈📚 Reading Rainbow & Gratitude in Action

Our Read Aloud mentors and mentees recently gathered for a special screening of the Reading Rainbow reboot. After enjoying the program together, participants created heartfelt thank-you cards for Laura Powell, Children's Librarian at Talbot Free Library, in appreciation of all she has done to support literacy and learning through our Read Aloud program this year.

It was a wonderful afternoon of creativity, connection, and gratitude! Thank you to our program partners Shore Lit and Critchlow Adkins Children's Centers for helping make experiences like these possible.

🎉📚 Congratulations to our Scholars!

We are proud to celebrate Evelin, Gisell, and Alexa, who were recently inducted into the J. Willard Davis Chapter of the National Honor Society at Easton High School.

Membership in the National Honor Society recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These Scholars have worked hard both in and out of the classroom, and this achievement reflects their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to their community.

On May 11, the pilot year of the Read Alliance program in Talbot County concluded with a graduation ceremony for the READers in this year's program. Thanks to a cross-organizational partnership between Building African American Minds, Inc., Talbot County Public Schools, Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center, and Talbot Mentors, the program's inaugural year was a huge success.

The goal of the READ Alliance program is for students to improve their reading by one grade level. On average, students in Talbot County's pilot year program improved by 1.01 grade levels, exceeding the goal. We couldn't be prouder of our READers and our teen leaders, and we couldn't be more grateful for the invaluable collaboration with our community partners.

A group of high school Scholars recently embarked on an enriching campus visit to the University of Maryland (UMD) in College Park. This opportunity allowed our students to experience the vibrant atmosphere of a major public university firsthand and gain valuable insights into college life.

We were fortunate to have a current UMD first-year student, Danelley Bartalon, lead our tour. Danelley provided an authentic and inspiring perspective, sharing her experiences and answering our students' questions with enthusiasm. The tour was filled with memorable moments that connected our students to the traditions and culture of UMD. A significant highlight was the mandatory stop outside the iconic McKeldin Library to engage with the beloved campus tradition involving Testudo, the Terrapin mascot. Our students eagerly participated, rubbing the nose of the bronze Testudo statue for good luck, a ritual believed to help students achieve success on exams and in their academic pursuits.

The trip exposed our scholars to the campus environment, academic resources, and spirited traditions of the University of Maryland, further fueling their aspirations for higher education.
