A group of high school Scholars recently embarked on an enriching campus visit to the University of Maryland (UMD) in College Park. This opportunity allowed our students to experience the vibrant atmosphere of a major public university firsthand and gain valuable insights into college life.

We were fortunate to have a current UMD first-year student, Danelley Bartalon, lead our tour. Danelley provided an authentic and inspiring perspective, sharing her experiences and answering our students' questions with enthusiasm. The tour was filled with memorable moments that connected our students to the traditions and culture of UMD. A significant highlight was the mandatory stop outside the iconic McKeldin Library to engage with the beloved campus tradition involving Testudo, the Terrapin mascot. Our students eagerly participated, rubbing the nose of the bronze Testudo statue for good luck, a ritual believed to help students achieve success on exams and in their academic pursuits.

The trip exposed our scholars to the campus environment, academic resources, and spirited traditions of the University of Maryland, further fueling their aspirations for higher education.

Join Talbot Mentors for a special screening of the powerful documentary Sentenced as we come together to raise awareness and support for our new READ Alliance program.

The documentary highlights how the inability to read can shape lives, limit opportunities, and contribute to cycles of poverty—while also showing the transformative power of literacy and support.

This screening is more than just a film—it’s a call to action. By attending, you’ll help support local efforts to improve literacy. Come be inspired, learn more about this important issue, and be part of the movement.

Here's what's scheduled on Mid-Shore Midday for today, Thursday, April 23rd:

A national literacy model is now in Talbot County—pairing young readers with paid teen tutors. Superintendent, Dr. Sharon Pepukayi from Talbot County Public Schools, and Executive Director of Talbot Mentors Kentavius Jones talk about what this collaboration could mean.

Dorchester County has re-commissioned a board to chart the public and private burial sites throughout the county. Zack Taylor reports that many have disappeared due to development, incursion of water, and some have simply been forgotten.

Mid-Shore at the Movies' Susan Morgan & Adam Canfield are reviewing Lee Cronin’s The Mummy with Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, and Natalie Grace. It is currently showing at the Easton and Cambridge Premium Theaters. They're also reviewing Miniature Wife starring Elizabeth Banks and Matthew Macfayden. It is streaming on Peacock.

Heather Cox Richardson's Letters from an American

Karen Cartwright has our community calendar, and we'll check your weather forecast.

Mid-Shore Midday airs Monday through Friday at 12n on 91.7 WHCP & 1p on 90.3 WFHW

Our Scholars recently visited St. John’s College in Annapolis for a campus tour and firsthand look at its unique academic environment.

During the visit, they explored campus and connected with a current junior from Korea, who shared her journey to the college and what drew her to its discussion-based, Great Books approach. Her perspective offered a meaningful look at how this experience compares to larger universities.

Opportunities like this help our Scholars explore different paths and imagine what’s possible next.

Talbot County Emergency Services encourages residents to take the following precautions during periods of extreme cold:

Minimize time outdoors, particularly for older adults, young children, and individuals with medical conditions. Check on neighbors, friends, and family members who may be more vulnerable.
Pets are also sensitive to extreme cold; ensure pets have warm shelter and limit their time outdoors.
Dress in several layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing rather than a single heavy layer. Wear hats, gloves, and warm footwear.
Be aware of frostbite. If skin becomes numb, waxy, white, or gray, warm the area gently and seek medical attention.
Watch for signs of hypothermia, including shivering, confusion, slurred speech, memory loss, and extreme fatigue. Seek medical assistance immediately if symptoms appear.
Use caution when heating your home. Follow manufacturer instructions for space heaters, fireplaces, and woodstoves.
Be aware of carbon monoxide risks when using fuel-burning appliances. Ensure carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly.
