What will the Eastern Shore look like 50 years from now?

Will future generations still be able to fish these waters, work these farms, walk these forests, and experience the landscapes that make this place so special?

Every day ESLC protects that future. By conserving working farms, advocating for open space, and supporting the people who steward these places, ESLC is helping ensure that agriculture, wildlife habitat, and outdoor traditions continue to define the Eastern Shore for generations to come.

Because conservation isn't just about protecting land, it's about protecting a way of life.

If you care about the future of the Eastern Shore, follow along and learn how conservation today shapes the communities of tomorrow.

What's the best way to stay cool during the Eastern Shore summer? Head to the woods!

The second best way? Head to ESLC's "Forever the Forest" plein air exhibition during the largest plein air festival in the U.S., right here in Easton, Maryland.

Thanks to the generous support of Bruce Wiltse and Bill Davenport, Eastern Shore Land Conservancy and Plein Air Easton (PAE) are collaborating once again for our third annual alumni invitational, "Forever the Forest," held during the 22nd Plein Air Easton Festival—the largest and most prestigious juried plein air painting competition in the country. Original studio works from PAE's best-of-the-best previous award winners will feature autumn scenes of wildlife habitat, sustainably harvested tree farms, pocket forests, campsites, and even ESLC’s own Jim and Mary B. Lynch Preserve—a 200+ acre woodland open to the public in Caroline County. Each of the forests illustrated in this competition is forever protected by ESLC in a perpetual conservation easement.

Please join us at the Tidewater Inn (101 East Dover Street) to take a break from the heat as you browse this year’s vibrant collection of new paintings, immersing yourself in the cool shady dappled woodlands of the Eastern Shore. Register for our opening reception below. Or join us for additional programming throughout the festival.

Permanently protected with an ESLC conservation easement since 1998. CBEC is thriving this time of year (and any season really) with beautiful trails, quiet pocket beaches, great birdwatching, kayak rentals, and more! It's a beautiful place for anyone to experience Eastern Shore nature and open space.

Did you catch our big news last week? Thanks to a new 70-acre ESLC conservation easement co-held by Maryland Environmental Trust (MET) and generously donated by the Macgill, Biggs, and Dailey families, the fields, forests, and shorelines of Swann Farm in Easton will continue to provide these benefits, and more, forever. As ESLC’s 342nd conservation easement, Swann Farm lifts ESLC’s total conservation in Talbot County to more than 13,951 acres.

“We are so grateful for this donated easement from the Macgill family,” commented ESLC President and CEO Steve Kline. “In areas of the Eastern Shore that are lacking in purchased easement opportunities, ESLC relies on donated easements to achieve our land conservation goals. Thanks to MET and the Macgills, Swann Farm will remain a quintessential Eastern Shore farm forever, offering bountiful farm fields, quiet woodlands, and clear creek water for generations to come.”
