What an incredible evening!
Tonight we gathered at the Staples Academy/Congregational Church Hall to dedicate the William G. Pomeroy Foundation Historic Marker honoring Samuel Staples and the founding of Staples Academy-one of Connecticut's earliest free schools, established in 1781.
From the gallery opening celebrating our town’s history to the laughter and joy shared on the lawn, tonight reminded us why local history matters.
A heartfelt THANK YOU to:
■ The William G. Pomeroy Foundation for making this marker possible
■ Our elected officials and community leaders who honored us with their presence
■ Every volunteer, historian, and neighbor who helped bring this evening to life
■ And most of all, YOU, for showing up and showing your love for Easton's history
As we approach America's 250th anniversary, we are proud to keep the spirit of Samuel Staples alive. His belief that every child deserves an education regardless of means is as powerful today as it was in 1781.
Our Past.Inspiring Our Future.

A beautiful day for a flag unfurling! Today, a Betsy Ross flag was proudly raised with the help of Joe Palmieri and his crew at the Easton Congregational Church Hall-the historic Staples Academy-as a visible reminder of our nation’s approaching 250th anniversary.
This flag design, traditionally associated with Betsy Ross, features thirteen stars arranged in a circle representing the original thirteen colonies united in a common cause. While historians continue to debate the exact origins of the design, the flag has become a powerful symbol of the American Revolution, independence, and the shared commitment to liberty that brought the colonies together.
As we prepare to commemorate America 250, it is especially fitting to see this historic emblem flying beside Staples Academy-a building erected in 1795, just a dozen years after the end of the Revolutionary War. Together, the flag and the Academy remind us of the generations who built our nation, invested in education, and worked to strengthen our communities.
We invite everyone to stop by, reflect on our shared heritage, and join us as we celebrate the stories, people, and ideals that continue to shape America today.

On this Memorial Day, as we pause to honor those who gave their lives in service to this country, the Historical Society of Easton is glad to note a new exhibit at the Weston History and Culture Center that brings that sacrifice close to home.
"Sarah Treadwell: Connecticut Mom, American Patriot, curated by Mark Brennan with research assistance from our own Society, tells the story of Sarah Wheeler, an early member of the North Fairfield Parish, the congregation from which Easton would eventually grow. Her first husband, Daniel Hoyt, died in 1777 from wounds sustained at the Battle of Ridgefield. Sarah later married Daniel Treadwell, also a member of the parish community. Together their story offers a glimpse into the lives of ordinary families navigating extraordinary times, and a reminder that behind every soldier lost, there was a family left to carry on.
The exhibit is on view at the Weston History and Culture Center, 104
Weston Road, Thursdays from 1 to 4 PM and the first and last Sunday of each month from 1 to 4 PM.
