The Working Artist Forum yesterday had a demonstration by the Dutch artist Carole Boggemann Peirson who works in oil and cold wax.

She is inspired by the idea that all living things are connected and that we are spiritual beings having a temporary physical experience. She enjoys creating harmonious paintings on cradled boards that invite the viewer to explore the intricate layers of colors and textures. The process of applying layers of oil paint and wax and then uncovering previous layers through solvents or scraping, results in an interesting balance between surprising effects and deliberate design.

Suzanne Stoltenberg has been hauling this project all over Talbot County.

There are paper triangles, poster board signs, prompts, pens, glue, tape, and the fabric backing that will eventually hold it all together. There is also Stoltenberg, sitting behind a table, convincing people they really do have something worth writing down.

Stoltenberg, a member of the Working Artists Forum, is leading a public project tied to Talbot250 in which people are invited to write a few lines on individual paper quilt pieces. Those pieces will become a large paper quilt that will be displayed at the Market at Dover Station in Easton when a Talbot 250-themed exhibit opens in May.

Before that happens, though, Stoltenberg is still collecting memories and thoughts.

There was a time when she realized she would need more than 200 pieces to create the project, this alarmed her.

But then people started writing, and that perspective changed. “The truth is, it has been fun. It’s been fascinating. It’s been a history lesson. I’ve met so many interesting people.”

For five years, she hid her art. Berated by college art teachers who told her she couldn’t draw, she kept my perceived failures buried under a stack of papers so no one would see. But a childhood illness and the death of her father when she was 25 had taught her not to take life for granted. She realized that I would likely regret it if she didn’t follow her passion, and the encouragement of a friend was the boost she needed to finally bring her art out into the world.

According to Goldstein: Years later, I’m thrilled to say that art is no longer my private contraband. To the contrary, my work is an inspiration for many happy collectors in the U.S. and in Europe; I’ve exhibited widely, won awards, been profiled in Pastel Journal (to see that article, click here), and have a painting in permanent collection in the Jean-Haffen Museum in Dinan, France, to name a few select accomplishments.

Write on WAF's paper quilt celebrating Talbot250 this Saturday March 21st--what you love here, a memory from the past, honor someone who made a difference, or reflect on the County's history. We will be at St. Michaels library from 9-12 and at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum from 1-4. The quilt will be on display with WAF's Talbot 250 art exhibition in May and June at The Market at Dover station for all to read.
