Massachusetts vital records are at risk! MGC is urging genealogists, researchers, and anyone who cares about access to historical records to take action on an important legislative development.

Governor Maura Healey’s supplemental budget proposal (H.5377) contains language in Section 43 that could significantly affect access to Massachusetts vital records. While MGC supports removing the outdated term “out-of-wedlock” from Massachusetts statutes, the proposed language in Section 43 goes further than intended and could create confusion and restrict access to records that researchers rely on.

MGC is asking that Section 43 be amended to a simple, targeted fix that removes only the offensive language without disrupting existing records access law.

What You Can Do:
Contact your Massachusetts state representative, state senator, and the Chairs of the House and Senate Committees on Ways and Means. Ask them to support the MGC’s proposed amendment to Section 43 and to approve Sections 44 and 45 as submitted.

Not a Massachusetts resident? You can still contact the Committee Chairs directly and share why access to Massachusetts vital records matters to your research.

To find your legislators, visit the MA Legislature website: https://malegislature.gov/Search/FindMyLegislator

The leaders of the Committees on Ways and Means are:

• House Chair: Aaron Michlewitz ([email protected], phone: 617-722-2990, fax: 617-570-6575)

• Senate Chair: Michael J. Rodrigues ([email protected], phone: 722-1114, fax: 617-722-1498)

• Senate Vice Chair: Joanne M. “Jo” Comerford ([email protected], phone: 617-722-1532)

We are still looking for volunteers to join our Board, specifically as Vice President, Programs Director, or Comms Director! DM us to learn more. 😊

MGC is seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join our nonprofit in several exciting roles! ☀️

Do you care about keeping genealogy records open and accessible? Want to make a real impact for local genealogy communities? MGC is looking for people like you.

Most of MGC’s work is conducted remotely; 5-6 Board meetings are held virtually via Zoom each year. We strongly encourage candidates with ties to Massachusetts or New England to reach out, as familiarity with local genealogy, archives, and records is a meaningful asset in each of these positions.

We are actively recruiting for the following positions:
• President: Lead our organization and represent MGC at the state and national level. (Expected start date: July 2027)
• Vice President: Support organizational leadership and grow our community partnerships. (Expected start date: July 2026)
• Director of Programs: Plan and coordinate our M:O.R.E. webinar series and educational events. (Expected start date: July 2026)
• Director of Communications: Manage our social media, email outreach, and public messaging. (Expected start date: July 2026)

All positions are entirely volunteer; no prior nonprofit experience is required. Just a passion for genealogy, history, and community.

If you or someone you know might be a good fit, we’d love to hear from you. Reach out to Mark Doherty with the MGC Nominating Committee at [email protected], or DM our page to start a conversation.

She’s on her way… AGAIN! At 5:30 this morning, MGC President Susan O'Connor boarded the 6:11am Acela high-speed Amtrak at Route 128 Station, headed to Washington, DC for Family History Hill Day 2026. For the third year in a row, Susan is representing the Massachusetts genealogy community on Capitol Hill. She will meet with lawmakers to advocate for robust funding for the National Archives and other agencies that make family research possible.

We are so proud of Susan’s dedication to this cause. And thanks to your generosity, we have already more than matched her donation of travel and lodging costs before Family History Hill Day even begins tomorrow! There’s still time left to donate to our campaign; every additional dollar raised will go directly to support MGC, including our M:O.R.E. presentations and other advocacy efforts: https://www.paypal.com/donate?campaign_id=FATM2HZAVXYZY

We did it in less than 24 hours! Thanks to your incredible generosity, MGC has hit our Family History Hill Day fundraising goal. Every dollar matched the in-kind contribution of MGC President Susan O’Connor, who is donating her own time and travel costs to represent you in meetings with members of Congress on April 15.

Thank you to everyone who donated and shared our campaign. Your support means the genealogy community has a real voice on Capitol Hill when it matters most.

The campaign is still open if you’d like to contribute to MGC’s advocacy efforts ahead of April 15: https://www.paypal.com/donate?campaign_id=FATM2HZAVXYZY. Every dollar helps fund MGC’s missions, and Susan can’t wait to represent you in DC!

Family History Hill Day is April 15, and MGC will be there! President Susan O'Connor is donating her time and covering her own travel to represent the Massachusetts genealogy community in Washington, DC, meeting with members of Congress to fight for something we all care about: protecting and expanding access to historical records at the National Archives (NARA).

NARA has been underfunded for years, and now faces even deeper cuts. The genealogy community needs a seat at the table; Susan is making sure Massachusetts has one.

MGC is aiming to match Susan’s in-kind contribution with a $1,200 donor goal. Everyone who gives will be recognized as an MGC Supporter.

Did you enjoy our M:O.R.E. presentation with Margaret Fortier Monday night? Programs like that don’t happen by accident: they take dedicated volunteers working behind the scenes to make MGC’s mission come to life.

MGC is actively recruiting volunteers this year, with three positions beginning in July:

• Program Director: Lead the planning and coordination of MGC’s programming, including events like Monday night’s M:O.R.E. webinar.

• Vice President: Support the President in guiding MGC’s strategic direction and step in as needed across board functions.

• Communications Director: Shape how MGC connects with members and the broader genealogical community through newsletters, social media, and outreach.

Whether you’ve been a longtime MGC member or are newer to the genealogy community, we’d love to hear from you. Reach out to us to learn more or to express your interest. We’re happy to answer questions about any of the roles.
