American folk legend and activist artist Pete Seeger was one of the Rosenberg Fund for Children's longest and staunchest supporters; we miss him every day. Even after his passing, his legacy continues to positively impact the RFC (and no doubt many other corners of the world).

About a month ago, we received a very generous donation from the Kendra Alexander Foundation in honor of Pete Seeger. Located in the Bay Area, the Foundation was a fiscal sponsor of a campaign which tried to get Seeger a Nobel Peace Prize. They included a note with their donation to the RFC that read, "These funds were the remaining funds from small donations by many of his supporters. The Board of the Foundation has decided to donate this money to your fund as Pete considered you an important charity."

We're honored and touched by the generosity of the Kendra Alexander Foundation Board and their decision to dedicate these remaining funds to us. We will make sure it all goes to very good use helping the children of targeted activists lead happier lives!

We are really looking forward to catching Ivy Meeropol's doc, "Ask E. Jean" at Amherst Cinema starting tomorrow! Ivy is the granddaughter of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg and also directed the 2020 Roy Cohn doc "Bully. Coward. Victim." and the 2004 film "Heir to an Ex*****on" about her grandparents. We can't wait to watch her latest doc, an important testimonial from E. Jean Carroll, the journalist who brought Tr*mp to court and won.

About the film:

"ASK E. JEAN is the thrilling story of E. Jean Carroll’s life, from her early days as Miss Cheerleader USA to her rise as a trailblazing journalist, author, and beloved advice columnist.

Carroll broke barriers as the first female editor at Esquire, Pl***oy, and Outside, helping to redefine women’s roles in media with her sharp wit and fearless voice.

In recent years, she reignited public discourse by standing up to power, becoming the only woman to beat Donald Trump twice in court, and sparking a national conversation about truth, accountability, and resilience.

This film is a portrait of an indomitable woman who proved it’s never too late to reclaim your voice, rewrite your story, and change the world."

"Blacklist Victim Lives to Laugh at Witchhunters (1956)

MAY 26 IS THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY of the long-delayed abandonment of an anti-communist witchhunt’s case against M.I.T. mathematics professor Dirk Struik.

Struik was a world-renowned mathematician and expert on the history of mathematics. Among other accomplishments, he was a founder of the Marxist scholarly journal Science & Society.

After teaching mathematics at M.I.T. for 25 years, he was subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee. When the committee demanded to know whether Struik had ever been a member of the Communist Party, Struik refused to answer, citing his Fifth Amendment right to avoid possible self-incrimination.

Six weeks later, a Boston grand jury indicted Struik on the charge of violating a Massachusetts law against “conspiracy to overthrow the governments of the United States and Massachusetts, and for advocating the overthrow by violence of the government of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,”

Struik pleaded not guilty and was released on bail. Later that day, M.I.T. suspended Struik from his professorship. At the same time M.I.T. agreed to keep him on the payroll because there was no known evidence he had ever done anything other than asserting his constitutional right against possible self-incrimination.

For more than four years the state of Massachusetts neglected to put Struik on trial. Then in an unrelated case, in 1956 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a Pennsylvania law against sedition was invalid, because it criminalized exactly the same conduct that would violate the federal McCarran Act.

The Massachusetts Supreme Court took note and ruled the Massachusetts law was invalid for the same reason. When the 54-month-old indictment of Struik was dismissed, Struik said it was "good news for the forces of sanity in this country."

M.I.T. quickly restored Struik to his post, but he taught for only three years before he turned 65, which was M.I.T.’s mandatory retirement age.

Before he died 41 years later at age 106, Struik said, “Mathematicians grow very old; it is a healthy profession. The reason you live long is that you have pleasant thoughts.” https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/06/29/1053203/how-an-mit-marxist-weathered-the-red-scare/"

The Institute knew it was getting a mathematician and a historian by hiring Dirk Struik. It also got a target of controversy.

Our second of two back-to-back events in April was a symposium on the Rosenberg Case and thoughtful discussion on the role of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, hosted by Boston University Libraries in partnership with the Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies and the Boston University School of Law Library and the Rosenberg Fund for Children.

With video recordings now available, we are pleased to share a post-event reflection from RFC Founder Robert Meeropol that includes links to the recorded panel discussion and special remarks from Congressman Jim McGovern, who was awarded a human rights champion award for his efforts to support the Exonerate Ethel campaign.

By RFC Founder Robert Meeropol The August 2024 release of the memo written by the National Security Agency’s (NSA) chief analyst, which concluded that my mother, Ethel Rosenberg, was not a spy, was a smoking gun. , George Floyd was killed in an act of police violence that shocked the nation and sparked a global uprising against racism and injustice.

His murder under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer became a painful symbol of systemic violence — and a call to action that could not be ignored.

Derek Chauvin was convicted, but true justice means dismantling the systems that made Floyd's death possible.

We remember. We demand better.

The wait is over! We are pleased to finally share our recording of the RFC's 35th anniversary celebration, "35 Years of the RFC: Stronger Together, Solidarity Forever" from April 11th in Northampton, Mass. Our event honored the many activist parents and young activists on the front lines of the resistance. It meant so much to be able to uplift stories of labor organizers, anti-war resisters, advocates for trans rights and so many more and to celebrate this milestone together with our community.

Watch the video here: https://www.rfc.org/35th

Hear gripping and powerful poetry readings by National Book Award-winner Martín Espada, a special musical performance and sing-a-long by the multiple award-winning, singer-songwriter and jazz musician, Pamela Means, and remarks from RFC Founder Robert Meeropol, RFC Executive Director Jenn Meeropol, RFC Granting Coordinator Cleo Rohn and activist parent, Kirby Amour!*

--
*Note: While we were looking forward to also hearing remarks from Angela Y. Davis about her decades of powerful activism and resistance, she became ill right before the event and was unfortunately not able to participate as scheduled.

Special thanks to Tom Adams / Reel Life Documentary Production for the videography and Jill Meyers for photos!
