Nashawannuck Pond

Nashawannuck Pond Nashawannuck Pond is an historical landmark in Easthampton, Massachusetts - a destination for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Organizers of Easthampton's WinterFest and other events, the Nashawannuck Pond Steering Committee raises awareness of our well loved pond and advises the city on issues related to keeping the pond healthy! Its shoreline meanders from Nonotuck Park, through parts of the downtown business district, along the edge of the Manhan Rail Trail, ending at the historic mill district. This page has been crea

ted by members of the Nashawannuck Pond Steering Committee and is administered by Liz Provo. The page is meant to be a community resource where news and events happening around the pond can be posted. Feel free to post a favorite "pond pic". This page is NOT affiliated with any municipal or government entity and is privately managed. You can send an email to "the pond" at: [email protected]. In 2011, after more than twenty years of planning, consultations, meetings, site visits, permitting reviews, and funding delays, the pond underwent a daunting major reconstruction. Years of sediment and w**d growth was dredged and removed, allowing for a deeper, cooler channel designed to impede w**d growth and encourage an improved natural habitat for fish and other species. In August 2012 the public was made aware of two grants available that would provide funding for a boardwalk recreational area along the pond as well as a public/private partnership opportunity to improve the Lower Mill Pond, helping to connect the downtown business community with Easthampton's historical mill district. The direction of any improvements will be a result of the community's vision for it's use. The boardwalk became a reality in the Spring of 2015 and is enjoyed by visitors daily. The Nashawannuck Pond Steering Committee is the organizer of Easthampton WinterFest.

CYANOBACTERIA TESTING UPDATE

A huge shout out to Connecticut River Conservancy (Jodie Berezen, Ryan O'Donnell and Melissa Langley) for their integral work in monitoring the health of Nashawannuck Pond. They performed cyanobacteria screening tests every 2 weeks starting in May. These “screening tests” can only show that that cyanobacteria might be present in levels that bear further investigation. The tests only detect plant pigments and are not definitive. They do not determine actual bloom conditions or toxicity. But they are relatively easy to do and help us be on the alert.
On 7/22/25, for the first time, the CRC results gave test results bearing further investigation. Following our previously established protocol set with NPSC and Easthampton BOH, the Nashawannuck Pond Steering Committee took additional samples for laboratory analysis to see what cyanobacteria might be present and if any toxins were present. We were much relieved and pleased to announce that the actual cyanobacteria presence was low and there was no indication of the presence of toxins in the water. In this particular case, the CRC screening results appear to have been an “outlier” based upon the more definitive follow-up analysis. The protocol worked!! Therefore, it seems that we have had yet another successful year with the barley straw, limiting the potential for cyanobacteria blooms.

How does barley straw work to deter cyanobacteria?

BARLEY STRAW UPDATE
Nashawannuck Pond Chair Paul Nowak and all consultants feel this endeavor was a favorable activity for the fourth year now. Barley Straw bags were deployed 4/22/25 and earlier than usual they have all been removed as of 10/6. Every year we have tweeked the process. This year we had the same amount of barley straw but had more bags and less in each one, therefore 95% of all the barley straw decomposed! We were able to remove them by kayak, as they were mostly empty.
