The Nauset Food and Research Garden, located behind the NRHS campus, is a 100 by 180 square foot organic farm plot run by volunteers and students, growing food for Cape food pantries and teaching ecology, nutrition, horticulture, and all-round Earth care.

My students and I in the "Greenhouse" at Nauset Middle School are holding a great PLANT SALE -- this THURSDAY, May 14, from 3:30 PM-6:00 PM. Native small pot trees and shrubs, native wildflowers, hanging nasturtium flower pots, and heirloom tomatoes and vegetable seedlings... All proceeds support the school's greenhouse and also visiting Wampanoag teachers in the Greenhouse program. No credit cards, unfortunately -- can accept cash or checks. (The greenhouse is on the parking lot on the south side of Nauset Middle School, the parking lot facing the Cardinals baseball diamond.) For Forest Gardeners: the (small 2-4 gallon) trees and shrubs we have are spicebush, p***y willow, persimmon, tupelo, white oak. We also have fledgling sassafras, American beech, shagbark hickory, and white cedar... Wildflowers are New England Aster, Mountain Mint, Penstemon, Baptisia australis (false indigo), wild quinine, and Jo Pye W**d... Also some rooted elderberry cuttings. Drop by!

We're back, with plants for you! Nauset Middle School is having its annual greenhouse sale -- details below! My greenhouse students have grown organic heirloom tomato and kale and collard starts, figs, elderberry, hanging flower pots (Nasturtium, Alyssum & Sweet Pea), succulents, June bearing strawberries, and wildflowers for pollinators (Jo Pye W**d, Butterfly W**d, Baptisia, Penstemon, Shrubby St. John's wort, Boneset, Echinacea)... Wine Cap Edible Mushroom Starter we've grown -- also perennial onions ("Egyptian Walking Onions")... It's cash only, so please come prepared. Our heirloom tomatoes include Cherokee Purple, the amazing Pineapple Tomato, Brandywine, Evergreen -- some hybrids too, like Sun Gold. We're into diversity here! (As we were when located at Nauset High School!)

While food growing at the Nauset High School garden was halted due to the building project there -- sustainable growing efforts at the middle school are continuing strongly. This year, Orleans Farmers Market has contributed to starting worm farming (vermicompost) to reduce food waste at the school; it has also contributed leaf mulch for starting more outdoor gardens with students in the Greenhouse classes.

Note that the Middle School's Greenhouse Plant Sale is this Thursday, May 18th! For sale are organic vegetable, herb, and flower seedlings: heirloom tomatoes, peppers, collards, kale, onions... Also, some perennial food producers: Elderberry and dwarf chinese chestnut seedlings, Jerusalem artichoke, Egyptian "walking onion", strawberry. Sales are cash only, and all proceeds will support visiting speakers and field trips, including Wampanoag teachers who will be giving guidance to the on-campus Forest Garden project this year.

Nauset Schools is increasing organic food growing at the Middle School, especially in available disturbed margins at the forest edge above Boland Pond -- this is a great thing! The school is showing strong support for this effort. It could be saddening that the construction process at the High School began with removal of the topsoil we created for the school garden, and significant, really quite massive removal of trees to make space for temporary classroom buildings. While all four Nauset-contributing towns voted for the high school rebuilding project, it needs to be noted that the march of development on Cape Cod is rarely well-balanced against issues of conservation, habitat, and climate change. This only means that the High School Development -- the buildings will surely be designed with energy conservation in mind, a good thing -- has a debt to its own sustainability goals. So "watch this space" as we hope that food growing will return as a goal for the high school. As for Orleans Farmers' Market, which has always worked for success of the High School's growing space, we only wish for this consciousness of soil, life, ecology, and nutrition to be held, held, and held, until it can take root again for high school students and perhaps, throughout the whole Nauset School System! For now "Nauset Food and Research Garden" remains a gleam in the eye for those who remember food growing at the high school -- but the Nauset School System with its gardens in the elementary schools and the middle school has the candle lit and glowing with now and future potential.
