A year before Stonewall, a twice-defrocked gay Pentecostal minister named Troy Perry gathered twelve people in his living room in Los Angeles for a worship service.

That first service on October 6, 1968, grew into the Metropolitan Community Church, and Perry performed what Time magazine described as the first public same-sex wedding in the United States just months later.

Q***r Christians didn't start asking questions in 2015. They've been worshipping, building, and refusing to leave for a very long time.

That year, translators of the Revised Standard Version rendered two Greek words — arsenokoitai and malakos — as a single English word that had never been used in scripture before.

Those two Greek words were combined for the first time and translated as "homosexual."

Researchers who later examined the Yale University archives where the RSV translation notes are held, concluded the decision was made in ignorance and without returning to the original sources.

Every English-speaking Christian who grew up hearing "the Bible clearly condemns homosexuality" was reading a 1946 translation decision. That's worth considering.

Sarah holds degrees in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and an MDiv from Fuller Seminary. She lives in Tacoma with her husband Brad, an elementary school music teacher, and has three adult children.
