I woke up this morning realizing it was eight years ago today that I found out from my GI surgeon at Duke that I had colorectal cancer after he performed a routine colonoscopy. I had been denying the symptoms for almost a year but hoping it was just hemorrhoids and at the age of 50 that I truly was too young to have colon cancer as my GP had been telling me. My life would be completely changed that day because of a 10 mm tumor that was found in my colon during the colonoscopy . I felt like my life was over and I was now a burden to my family as I faced a stage 3 colon cancer diagnosis especially with the 6 months of chemotherapy to treat my cancer. It was in those days I truly felt like the music had died in my life.

Today I will stand in front of a few researchers, students and faculty members from UNC Cancer center to speak about my experience in participating in clinical trials and research studies as I was treated for my cancer. I’ll get to talk about how participating in those research studies helped to impact my life as a patient and also to support others patients in the future. I look forward to sharing a bit about my role in helping to create the nonprofit Man Up to Cancer with Trevor Maxwell a few years ago. Turning my pain into purpose is how the music has returned to my life. I am truly grateful that today I’m truly living my best day possible after surviving cancer.

**If you are 45 years of age or older get screened for colorectal cancer. A colonoscopy saved my life. No matter the age if you’re symptomatic and have blood in your stool, irregular bowel movements, abdominal cramping , fatigue and unexplained weight loss talk to your doctor about screening options that might be available for you to detect colon cancer.

The next episode of the Man Up to Cancer Podcast drops on 5/19!

Don’t miss Trevor’s inspirational conversation with Chuck Aiken from Glens Falls. Chuck is a six-year survivor of acute myeloid leukemia who underwent a stem cell transplant in 2020 while facing cancer, COVID, and chemotherapy all at once. He shares what Man Up to Cancer has meant to him throughout that journey — from the support and brotherhood he found during some of his hardest days to the way the community helped him keep moving forward.

Chuck is a legend in the MUTC community for his service to others and for living out his favorite saying: “It costs nothing to be kind.” And yes — he also explains why pineapple on pizza should be considered a crime against humanity.

The men's cancer revolution is gaining steam and we're headed to Texas to connect with 3500+ of our favorite people — oncology nurses!

The Oncology Nursing Society's 51st Annual Conference takes place May 13-17 at the Henry B. González Convention Center in downtown San Antonio.

If you'll be there, please stop by to say hello and grab some Man Up to Cancer swag from me and my ride-or-die brother Joe Bullock at exhibit booth 246.

I'll be speaking on the main stage on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. along with the amazing Dr. Cristina Pozo-Kaderman, director of the Young Adult Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. We'll be talking about the burdens of survivorship — the ones you can see and the ones you can't — for young adults and men.

I can't imagine what my cancer journey would have been like without the incredibly smart, skilled, kind, and thoughtful oncology nurses who have taken care of me in my lowest moments, and celebrated the wins with me and my family.

This trip's gonna be special!
