Presumpscot Tribe #21 Improved Order of Red Men Presumpscot Tribe #21 is chartered by the Great Council of the State of Maine and is located on 22 S In 1812 at Fr.

The Improved Order of Red Men was originally started by the men who formed the Sons of Liberty during the American Revolution. In an effort to conceal their identities from the British authorities, the Sons of Liberty would disguise themselves as Mohawk Indians. In addition to using the imagery, they also adopted phrases and terminology. Following the Revolution, these groups stayed together infor

mally, but following the formation of the Order of the Cincinnati, comprised only of the generals in the American army, the Sons of Liberty organized themselves into the Order of St. Tamanny, in honor of Tamanny, an Indian chief friendly toward Europeans. As these chapters met mostly in bars and taverns, it quickly degenerated into a drinking club and many of the members sought to improve the focus of the Order. Mifflin, these members met and constituted the Improved Order of Red Men and it is this organization that is recognized by Charter received from Congress as being the oldest native American fraternal organization in the United States.
