A message from Jerry Honig’s niece.
It is with great sadness that our family shares the passing of Jerry Honig, longtime math teacher, baseball coach, and assistant principal at East Rockaway High School. Jerry began teaching at East Rockaway in 1962 and spent 33 years serving the district. Over those three decades he taught generations of students, coached baseball—including a championship team in 1971—and advised many school activities, from the yearbook to the National Honor Society. He believed strongly in building real relationships with students and took pride in being part of a school community that meant so much to him.
One of Jerry’s greatest joys in retirement was attending class reunions and reconnecting with former students and colleagues. He loved hearing the stories people remembered from his classroom—even many years later. Ever the math teacher, after retiring from East Rockaway in 1995, Jerry continued teaching at Nassau Community College and Hofstra University for many years and remained deeply grateful for the decades he spent in education and the students whose lives intersected with his.
Funeral services for Jerry will be held this Sunday, March 8th at 10 am at Gutterman’s Funeral Home in Rockville Centre. All are welcome.
