Ten Ring Junior Shooters

Ten Ring Junior Shooters Ten Ring Junior Shooting Team, formerly Hellgate Junior Shooting Team, has been in existence since 1958. Coach Wes is the assistant rifle and pistol coach.

Whether taking the first steps into competitive shooting or refining skills, we offer the support needed to compete at local, state, regional, and national levels and in preparation for collegiate - NCAA or international settings. In May 2023, Western Montana Fish and Game Association at Deer Creek started building a multi-use facility, Liberty Center, that is now the home for many youth shooting

sports in the Missoula area. Many of these groups were struggling to find practice and competition space for their air rifle, air pistol, and archery activities. Undeterred by these challenges, many of these young shooters are competing, placing, and winning at regional, national, and international-levels. At the invitation of the WMF&GA, the junior shooting team moved and Ten Ring Junior Shooting Team was formed. Our beginning sporter program starts in September and ends in April. Our advanced precision travel team competes into the summer months. The program has been dedicated to teaching young men and women basic and advanced marksmanship in the disciplines of rifle and pistol, and most importantly, gun and range safety. We start young shooters as early as nine (9) years of age through high school. It is and has been geared toward the competitive agendas of three-position air rifle as well as the Olympic (International) Style of 60 shots standing, three- and four-position smallbore (.22), and Olympic Style of 60 shots standing air pistol. Our coaches meet the athletes where they are, whether taking the first steps into competitive shooting or refining skills, we offer the support needed to compete at local, state, regional, and national levels and in preparation for collegiate - NCAA or international settings. From its early beginnings, this program has produced several state, regional, and national champions. Our junior shooting athletes have been recruited and have competed for the Air Force Academy, the Coast Guard Academy, the United States Military Academy (West Point), the Ohio State University, University of Nebraska, University of Tennessee Martin, and the University of Texas El Paso. Our current program is under the direction of Head Coach Jason Herndon with Wes Hale assisting. Coach Jason has successfully competed in air rifle, smallbore rifle, air pistol, and sport pistol at the local, regional, state, national, and international arenas for over 30 years in addition to coaching these disciplines. He serves as a consultant for the shooting sports in a variety of capacities and is a board member for WMF&GA. Coach Jason is an NRA instructor as well as a Level 3 pistol coach. Along with his father, he manages and owns Double Front Cafe in Missoula. Coach Jason has been married to Kerry for almost 30 years. They share three beautiful daughters who dance competitively as well as compete for Ten Ring. He began training in precision rifle 20 years ago at the Hellgate Civilian Shooters Association. He competed in and won numerous state championships as a junior and has also qualified for and won several competitions in rifle at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. In 2013, he received a bachelor's in microbiology from the University of Montana and briefly left shooting sports to co-found the biomedical research and development company Wintermute Biomedical. Coach Wes is an entrepreneur consultant and has assisted several startup businesses with patents, policies, and funding. Upon his return to shooting sports in 2018, he began coaching. He officially started coaching our youth in 2020 and has since expanded to coaching adults who are interested in improving their rifle skills for biathlon at Ten Ring Biathlon Academy.

It's Time To Meet Our Athletes and Find Out What's In His Gear Bag!
Now Up: Coach Jason

Coach Jason: My age is old but 49 years old! If you must know, I'm not in school anymore. They kicked me out because they needed the desk space. At the age of 10, I started shooting small bore rifle at the Hellgate Civilian Shooting Association under the direction of Dick Houldson. Coach Jason has been competing for almost 40 years.

Some Accomplishments:
Three major shooting accomplishments would be making the Junior National Pistol Team in 1993, qualifying for my first World Cup in 2015, and earning a spot on the 2018 World Championship Team. What Coach Jason does not say is that he still competes at an exceptional level nationally and internationally.

Guns that Coach Jason shoots:
The guns I use are a 1913 Anschutz smallbore rifle, a Walther LP 500 air pistol, a Toz model 35 free pistol, and a Hammerli 280 for rapid and sport pistol.

What I do Outside Of Shooting:
I spend my spare time with my family. (Family is very important to Coach Jason. He adores his beautiful wife and three daughters.) I enjoy working on older cars and his wife is waiting for garage space for her car. I also reload shells, shooting, and of course coaching. Coach Jason also manages and co-owns a restaurant with his father that serves some of the best food in town!!

Future Plans:
As far as my future plans, I haven’t the foggiest at the moment.

Time For The Big Question:
What's In Your Gear Bag Excluding Your Fi****ms ???
I always have an assortment of different ammo and pellets, Allen wrenches that don’t fit anything (what???), shot targets with no dates or scores on them, as well as a barbeque lighter and a metal file … ask him if you dare! He puts anything else sketch into his daughter’s gear bag! My most important piece of equipment for pistol are my Champion Shooting Glasses.

Thanks for reading! We will meet a brand new shooting athlete next and find out: What's in their gear bag?!

It's Time To Meet Our Athletes and Find Out What's In His Gear Bag!
Now Up: Coach Kody

Coach Kody is 20 years old and is an electrician. He began competitive shooting when he was a sophomore in high school. A friend brought him out to the range and took to it like a fish in water (more on that later). He fell in love with it and hasn't left. And we are sure happy with that!

Some Accomplishments:
Some of Coach Kody’s greatest accomplishments have to do with coaching the younger shooters. “It is so rewarding to help a kid with one little thing and see it change his score on the next target,” Coach Kody said. At a recent Blood and Guts Match, Coach Kody beat the Junior National Champion, Marcus! OhMyGoodness!

Guns that Coach Kody shoots:
When he started shooting he shot an air rifle. Then he moved to a small-bore biathlon rifle. Now he shoots an air pistol.

What I do Outside Of Shooting:
In his spare time in the summers, he is exploring up in the mountains, hunting, or backpacking. Currently, he is on the ice in the winters. When questioned further, Coach Kody elaborated that it is ice fishing. He fishes at all the lakes up by Salmon and Seeley Lakes as well as Browns, Clark Canyon, Fort Peck, and a bunch around Helena. Coach Kody states, ”Fort Peck is really fun because everything in that lake is huge. I like salmon because it tastes good and is fun to fish for. A big one around Seeley is 3 pounds and the average there (FP) is about the same so everything is bigger and it makes it a lot more exciting.” He would not, however, say exactly where he was or what he was using!

Future Plans:
Kody’s plans include continuing to learn more as an electrician, and do as much hunting, fishing, shooting, exploring, and coaching as he can.

Time For The Big Question:
What's In Your Gear Bag Excluding Your Fi****ms ???
Since Coach Kody shoots multiple disciplines, his gear bag varies slightly for each one. Currently, he shoots air pistol so his range bag is pretty bare bones. (But what about your truck??) He has his pellets, fill adapter, journal, and a good attitude. Once again, he is so good! He uses his journal and brings a good attitude!!

It's Time To Meet Our Athletes and Find Out What's In His Gear Bag!
Now Up: Austin

Austin began competitive shooting three years ago when his parents found out about it, and he thought it would be fun. He is 13 years old and in the seventh grade.

Some Accomplishments:
Austin's best standing target is a 79 out of 100. Standing is the hardest position of the shooting sports. He shot amazingly well. At a recent competition in Darby, he set a personal best as well as a team record for an individual Sporter shooter. He along with three teammates also set a team record for the Sporter division! Way to go!!

Guns that Austin shoots:
He shoots a Crosman Sporter air rifle and a Hammerli Rifle.

What I do Outside Of Shooting:
In my spare time, I use remote control vehicles, make items with my 3-D printer, and mountain bike in the summer.
What Austin does not elaborate on, is that he is VERY techie like his dad, Scott. He investigates and checks out anything new at the range particularly if it is electronic or mechanical.

Future Plans:
I plan to move onto the precision class in shooting, and improve my mountain biking.

Time For The Big Question:
What's In Your Gear Bag Excluding Your Fi****ms ???
Typically, for practice and when I go off to a match, I bring my rifle, my bag, and my "box." My bag has my sling, my kneeling roll, a ruler for standing, and a few small assorted parts. As for what is in my box, there are pellets, eye protection, ear protection, and my journal. No wonder he is so good! He uses his journal!!

It's Time To Meet Our Athletes and Find Out What's In Her Gear Bag!
Up First: Molly Herndon

Molly is a 17 year old who is a junior at Big Sky High School here in Missoula. She began competitive shooting because her dad coaches it and wanted to try it out. Her dad, Jason, is a national and international air pistol competitor.

Some Accomplishments:
Molly has competed in the Junior Olympics at the Olympic and Paralympic Training Center twice as well as several national matches. In addition, she is growing as a competitive shooting athlete.

Guns that Molly shoots:
I shoot .22 sport pistol, air pistol, .22 rifle, and precision air rifle.

What I do Outside Of Shooting:
In my free time, I am either with friends or at dance.
What she does not say but it is known, Molly is a very successful competitive dance athlete. She competes nationally with her very accomplished dance team.

Future Plans:
Molly plans to continue shooting after high school and has started looking at colleges.

Time For The Big Question:
What's In Your Gear Bag Excluding Your Fi****ms ???
In my gear bag, there is my pink pellet shaker, about four safety glasses, and ear plugs.
When asked if she gets anything unexpected, Molly answers:
"Yes, of course. Umm, at one point there were some tennis balls in my bag along with, like, a whole case of hand warmers that my dad put in there. Occasionally, there is gear that gets thrown in my bag that is not mine and belongs to other athletes."

Thanks for reading! We will meet Austin next and find out: What's in his gear bag?!
