In Recognition of PTSD Awareness Day, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is committed to supporting Deputies who experience post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to traumatic events in their line of duty.
PTSD can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event and can manifest itself in a variety of symptoms, including flashbacks, severe anxiety, nightmares, uncontrollable thoughts about the event, inhibition of daily activities, strained relationships, and a fractured sense of self. Triggers can dredge up ill feelings long after enduring the traumatic event, causing feelings of concern, anger, fear, or helplessness. The signs of PTSD appear differently in each person afflicted, so recognizing the symptoms and understanding the challenges faced by those living with PTSD is crucial in creating a supportive environment.
LASD continues to advocate for mental health awareness and support within the law enforcement community, recognizing that maintaining the mental well-being of officers is crucial for their effectiveness and safety on the job.
