Greeting,
Due to the recent destruction left by the continued storms from 12/22 - 2/23, Woodlawn received a lot of property damage from the rain water. Woodlawn is an 153 year old cemetery and prior to ownership change in 2021 over the year’s maintenance was not timely if at all, most of the burials are 90 years and older.
Please keep in mind that older burial were either wrap in cloth, wooden caskets or cardboard structures, no burial vaults were required, as time has pass those containers and context no longer exist causing a gap in the grounds over time. Unfortunately the current events of continued rain caused facilities unusable, sinkage and unsafe cracking within the property grounds.
Woodlawn was sued in early 2000, and cemetery was under the state for control, a judgment was order and a settlement was reached and families were paid $650.00, which in the case of most of the burials was almost twice the amount they initially paid. It was also ordered by the courts for that company “Evergreen” to forfeit all contracts leaving the cemetery defunct.
Woodlawn does not have a date for reopening, but we’re anticipating a late July opening, we are diligently trying to fix all the issues as soon as we can, given the lack of family, community or entity participation. Please contact us regularly for upcoming updates.
Woodlawn is now 100% privately owned, people volunteer their time and financial support to keep Woodlawn active. Woodlawn respects that family will like to visit, but we also encourage families to participate in volunteering and donations to help keep Woodlawn surviving.
If you will like to sign up to volunteer or donate your help could expedite the opening back to the property sooner than later, all help is needed. Please call 310-933-8850 during business hours of 11am - 3pm M,W,F,Sa.
For those that want to contact the Cemetery and Funeral Bureau here is their number as well 916-574-7870, they will also inform you that Woodlawn is private property NOT regulated under the State of California.
As Always, Restoring Dignity and Respect One Section At A Time.
Sincerely,
Woodlawn Celestial Gardens
