Tuition Mission Foundation

Tuition Mission Foundation See our web site for details and applications. The Tri-State Area Tuition Mission Foundation - formerly known as Dollars for Scholars - was launched in 1962.

The Tri-State Area Tuition Mission Foundation provides tuition awards to needy college-bound students in eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. The first awards totaled $9,750, and were made in June 1963 to 20 needy students from school districts in eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia. The Foundation is administered by Officers and a Board of Direc

tors representing school districts in eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia and western Pennsylvania. Since 1992, no funds have been used for operating expenses. Instead, all operating expenses are covered by the in-kind contributions of a few generous supporters. We know of no other local charitable organization which can match our boast that 100% of the funding raised goes directly to the charity’s beneficiaries. The only exception to this rule are those funds which donors have requested be invested, which means that we award only the income from the invested funds. For the 2013—2014 academic year, awards totaling over $150,000 were made to several dozen area students. The top award is $3,000/student, with the majority of recipients receiving this top amount. Perhaps the most compelling evidence which supports our work is the fact that, " . . . for each $1,000 of subsidy, the college attendance rate rises by four to six percentage points . . . Aid eligibility also appears to increase completed schooling" (taken from "The Behavioral and Distributional Implications of Aid for College," by Susan Dynarski of the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government, published in American Economic Review, 2002). Clearly, the availability of Tuition Mission Foundation aid makes a tremendous difference for many dozens of tri-state area students each year.

Area high school seniors! You can soon begin applying for Tuition Mission Foundation (TMF) funding for the 2026 - 2027 academic year. Our application period opens this Sunday, March 1st and closes on Wednesday, April 15th. Go to TuitionMission.net and click on "Apply for a tuition award" at the upper right.

Our top tuition award amount for the current academic year was $10,000/student, with most of the recipients getting this top amount. TMF — then known as Dollars for Scholars — made its first awards in 1963, and in the years since, the foundation has provided over $9 million to thousands of area students.

TMF accepts applications from students in eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia as long as applicants' permanent residence is located within the seven-district range we serve (see TuitionMission.net/districts-we-serve). This includes students from non-traditional settings, such as those who've been home-schooled or who are enrolled in online schools. We provide tuition awards for all varieties of post-secondary education — from college and graduate school to licensure and certification programs.

Remember: TMF doesn't look at grades, SAT scores, extra-curricular involvement, etc. The only information TMF takes into account is financial need. Please share this post, especially if you're an area senior, parent of a senior, etc. Thanks so much!

Local folks, PLEASE share!

We at the Tuition Mission Foundation (formerly Dollars for Scholars) in downtown East Liverpool are sad to be losing longtime bookkeeper Marsha Watson after almost twenty years. We need someone 18 or older who's conscientious, reliable, math-comfortable (haha), local to East Liverpool and detail-oriented to fill the position. The job would be at least two and possible three full days weekly.

Tuition Mission was launched in 1962 and since then, has made about $9 million in tuition awards (essentially, interest-free loans) to college-bound students in seven districts in our area. We make awards for ANYTHING post-secondary, from certification and licensure programs to college to law school and med school.

Marsha's last day is Friday, October 4th, so we're in a bit of a pinch. Thanks so much in advance for spreading the word! Interested folks can contact me at [email protected].

Our annual application period ends at midnight on Monday, April 15th . . . please encourage anyone you know to apply if they live in the seven districts we serve (East Liverpool/OH, Beaver Local/OH, Midland/PA, Oak Glen/WV, South Side/PA, Wellsville/OH and Western Beaver/PA)!

The application is mobile-friendly. If applicants have their tax info together (having parents nearby can be a big help), the application takes only ten to 15 minutes to complete and submit.

Tuition awards are made for one year only, so you must re-apply each year. Applicants are notified as to whether or not they're getting a tuition award by early June each year.

We're now accepting applications for the 2024 - 2025 academic year. In addition to making tuition awards for college, we also do so for associate programs, trade and vocational education and graduate school. As always, the application period is two months total and so will remain open until Monday, April 15th, 2024.

We make an ENORMOUS difference for students in seven school districts in our area. For the past academic year, TMF made tuition awards totaling $264,933 to 30 students. The top award was $13,000/student, which about half of the student recipients were awarded. The average award was $8,831/student.

A couple of notes:

1) If you are a student (or know a student) who applied before and didn't receive a tuition award, we urge you to apply again. Your financial situation, or ours, may have changed in a way that's favorable for your 2024 - 2025 application.

2) If your family has more than one person enrolled in a post-secondary program, please: you should all apply! This actually increases your chances of receiving a tuition award, because we recognize the financial difficulties of paying for college for more than one person simultaneously.

To apply, gather together all pertinent 2023 income/tax info before you begin. If you're a younger student or dependent as far as your tax situation goes, it can be helpful to have a parent or guardian with you as you fill out the application.

Then go to TuitionMission.net, and at the top, click on "Apply for a Tuition Award." Please share this post, and thank you!

The Tuition Mission Foundation is calling for applications from college-bound students in the tri-state area.

The application period opens on Wednesday, February 15th and closes on Saturday, April 15th.

TMF Vice-President Catherine S. Vodrey recommends that applicants have all 2022 tax information in front of them before starting, as the website does not offer a way to save the application once a student has started. "The application has to be done in one fell swoop," Vodrey says. "We recommend that students have a parent or guardian with them to help as they fill out the application." The application takes ten to 15 minutes to fill out and submit.

Students from seven area school districts are invited to apply. These are in eastern Ohio (East Liverpool, Beaver Local and Wellsville districts); northern West Virginia (Oak Glen district); and western Pennsylvania (Western Beaver, Midland and South Side districts).

Students who have been home-schooled or who have done online schooling are welcome to apply as well, as long as they permanently reside in any of the aforementioned school districts.

All tuition awards function as interest-free loans. Last year, the top award was $8,500 per student, with the majority of students receiving this top amount. Grades, SATs, etc. do not figure into the calculation. Financial need is the only real criterion. Awards are generally announced in late May or early June.

The application is available online only and can be filled out and submitted via computer or cellphone, as the website is mobile-responsive. TuitionMission.net is the website address.

The annual application period for the Tri-State Area Tuition Mission Foundation (TMF, and formerly Dollars for Scholars®) begins on Tuesday, February 15th. Applications will be accepted through midnight Friday, April 15th.

Students from seven districts in eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia are encouraged to apply. The Foundation was launched in 1962 and made its first awards in 1963. In the 59 years since the first awards were made, TMF has made tuition awards totaling over $7.5 million.
