In June, I received a call from a lady whose ancestor worked at a hotel/saloon on Second Street called the "Ohio House". She was hoping the building was still there (It's long gone!) I was able to provide several photos of the structure as it had appeared. Also known as the Dever Hotel, the Albion House and allegedly, the "Black Bear". Anyone have more details or photos?

I recently darkened this cabinet card image that came from the Thompson-Steinfeld family, but was badly faded. It shows Civil War veteran Henry W. Thompson sitting with his young grand-daughter, Berenice Thompson, at the Thompson home at 341 W. Fourth Street. Henry was born in England in 1841 and was a potter. He served almost a year in the 62nd Pennsylvania with half a dozen other EL men who had been disappointed in their attempts to enlist in Ohio. Berenice graduated in 1912 and soon married Barnard H. Steinfeld, who graduated in the same class. Henry lived till 1919, Berenice until 1965.

Several months ago, I received a call from someone out of state who wanted to mail a box of memorabilia relating to an EL WW2 veteran who was killed on a bombing mission over Germany in September 1944. The box arrived this week and concerns S/Sgt. Raymond M. Wilson who was only 19 when his B-17 was hit. More to come...

This history stuff may be getting out of hand, our new pup, Zoe, believes that she is related to "Dewey", who appears in the foreground of the Trotter Hardware Store photo that has appeared previously.

This photo shows what is described as the home of Harry Thompson on St. Clair Avenue. The house still stands today and is almost unchanged. I'll let people speculate for a bit before adding details. Harry's son, Kenneth, was one of the first local soldiers to lose his life in World War One. No known relation to the C.C. Thompson family.

It constantly surprises me how often a photo posting ties in with other material and results in more of a complete story. I had never seen the wider version of the old Fifth Street Cemetery photo, showing a large structure in the rear. It turned out to be the old Sixth Street School that stood from 1880 to 1956.

With patience and a little luck, it is still possible to identify those photographic mysteries and return certain images from obscurity. I acquired the first photo in a small album that contained several East Liverpool people, but this Union officer kept his secret identity for nearly twenty more years. Two months ago I was speculating that maybe someone else had posted an image on "Find-A-Grave" and was very pleased to find a companion photo, taken in the same Cincinnati studio in 1862. Introducing Captain William M. McClure, originally of Company A, 115th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, later serving in Co.E. McClure spent over 30 years after the war as a kiln expert, dying in 1912. He is buried in Riverview Cemetery, not far from Jacob Shenkel.

Last night ,Linda and I went to the Columbiana Public Library to see a first person performance by a man who portrays Pretty Boy Floyd. I was disconcerted by the fact that he kept his finger on the trigger of his fake Thompson machine gun throughout the presentation. I was also surprised at his age ( Floyd was 30 years old when he fell under the fire of ELPD and FBI officers on the Conkle farm ) A life of crime apparently ages you! AND, never let it be said that I don't know how to show my wife a good time.

One of the early draftees who would have been in the recent Second Street train station photo was Elwyn Shenkel who was a grandson of Jacob Shenkel of Civil War fame. Serving with the 332nd Infantry on the Italian Front, Shenkel proudly wore the special shoulder insignia designed by someone in the unit after seeing the "Lion of St. Mark" in Venice. One of the most unusual insignia adopted during the Great War.
