Hello Friends!

I do not post on Facebook much but I feel i cannot stay silent. The bird population in Virginia (and nationwide) is decreaomg at an alarming rate. This is due primarily to the disappearance of their (our) ecosystem and the reduction in the insect population.

Simply put, the choices that humans are making are destroying the ecosystem that we all share. In Rockbridge County, over just the past 30 years, I have witnessed the forests cut down to be replaced by mowed lawns and the extreme decrease in our insect population. Total insect biomass has decreased by 75% nationwide. If you are not concerned, you should be!

A simple way to reverse this trend is to stop mowing your lawns and to stop putting chemicals on the vegetation as a solution to cutting it back or maintaining it. In the United States, we believe mowing a lawn is a very neighborly thing to do. We believe a wild lawn equates to an unkept lawn. And an unkept lawn is an indication that the humans who own it do not have all their ducks in a row. Mowing your lawn is therefore partially image driven. It is about how we want people to see us when it should be about the health of us all.

Simply put, It is time to rebuild our ecosystem and to re-wild our lawns. Let the tall grasses grow and the native species flourish! Nothing is more beautiful than a healthy ecosystem! And a mowed lawn is the deadest ecosystem on earth! If it is about how others see you, declare that they see you authentically and not as a section of mowed grass.

Educate your neighbors! Explain to them why you are no longer mowing your lawn so that they can be informed. because in another 50 years, if we do not make changes now, there will not be an ecosystem to save.

Please help one of our own during a difficult time. Anyone who once came to the “really really free market” free store or one of the “buy nothing” pop ups has benefited from this family’s donated time and energy. They are now facing several significant battles at home, including thier father being placed on hospice and mom going through another cancer battle. Let’s show them some love like they showed us love many time before and bring them some meals (or gifts to purchase meals) 🙏

Amanda’s kids and grandkids are faced with the sad news of their loving father/grandfather being placed on hospice. They have been told he will likely leave for heaven in the next few days. Please let’s gather around and support this family as they have done for many others in our community. Thi...

This year’s Christmas project will focus on special needs adults. Just like nursing home residents (we did 72 of them last year) this group of people are often forgotten. A lot of these adults live in group homes and again just like nursing home residents only get $50 a month of their check for personal use. A lot of them have little to no family. Let’s make these AMAZING individuals feel special and have a wonderful Christmas. If you know a special needs adult age 18-202 that could use extra for Christmas please contact me immediately. If you’d like to adopt one of these individuals or even donate one or two items (some items are as simple as snacks, hot wheels, sunglasses, etc), or give a monetary donation please let me know. Gift cards are a big request! McDonald’s, Applebee’s, Dairy Queen, Walmart.
As always thank you to the amazing souls that help us help so many!!!!!
