OUR MISSION STATEMENT: Lansing Roller Derby is a skater run, nonprofit 501(c)3 roller derby league committed to making the Greater Lansing Area an even better place to live. Within our league we strive to promote health and physical fitness, healthy competition and to provide opportunities for leadership and personal growth. Within the community we work with like-minded organizations to provide vo
lunteers, funding and support to further their goals and our common goal of improving life in the Lansing area. PURPOSE: In every way possible, we strive to build and maintain an inclusive environment and league culture that promotes the goals of accepting, respecting, and valuing differences which include attributes such as age, race, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender expression, sexual identity, ability, language, family circumstances, socioeconomic status, and cultural backgrounds. BACKGROUND: Established in July of 2010, LRD calls the northeast side of the Greater Lansing Area, specifically, East Lansing, Michigan, home. In 2014, the LRD organization had the opportunity to give our brand, culture and mission a complete overhaul. Our new recipe for our growing success is simple; devote ourselves to a culture that truly embraces a positive and empowering environment, yet simultaneously provides a robust competitive and athletic experience. Our group is here for each other both on and off the track and we mean that. To this day, the core of our foundation is built upon this cultural concept. As of October 10th, 2021, the members of the Lansing Derby Vixens (LDV) and Lansing Junior Vixens (LJV) have officially integrated into one organization with East Lansing Roller Derby (ELRD). Starting January 1, 2022, the organizations will begin our year long transition into the more representative name of “Lansing Roller Derby”. The current ELRD organization will also be facilitating the development of the junior roller derby team, Lansing Junior Roller Derby (formerly Lansing Junior Vixens). For years the Michigan Roller Derby community has asked us why there are two teams in Lansing? In 2017, leadership from both ELRD and LDV sat down to answer that question. Both leagues agreed, the Greater Lansing area was too small to satisfy the needs of two separate roller derby organizations. Over the course of several conversations, we discussed what was important to each league and what one league could look like for the Greater Lansing area. Ultimately, it took a pandemic to finally bring our teams together. It’s been a long time coming, but we are so excited to move forward as one team, one family. LEAGUE COMPOSITION & OPERATIONS: LRD currently consists of both travel teams and home teams. Our travel teams consist of, our A-level, most competitive team, the B-level, competitive team and C-level, growth and development team. All travel teams play in bouts across the Midwest region and Ontario, Canada, to compete with both WFTDA and non-WFTDA affiliated roller derby organizations. Our home teams, compete with LRD members against other LRD members. Our home teams pay homage to old ELRD and LDV team names; the Mitten Mavens (Black), Broadbarians (Grey), the Derby Vixens (Green), and Capital Corruption (Purple). LRD operates under the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association rule set, insurance coverage, and statement regarding gender. To become a skater with LRD you must 18 years or older and identify as a cisgender woman or “an individual who identifies as a trans woman, intersex woman, and/or gender expansive if women’s flat track roller derby is the version and composition of roller derby with which they most closely identify.”
