MSU Alum & Former LGBTQ+ Student Leader Brings Award-Winning Animated Film to Lansing
Michigan State University alum Anthony Hand (JMC '91) is returning to Michigan with his debut independent animated film, Maxxie LaWow: Drag Super-Shero, for its Midwest Premiere at the Capital City Film Festival on Wednesday, April 9. This vibrant, campy, and heartfelt film follows Simon, a shy small-town barista, who transforms into the glamorous, crime-fighting drag super-shero, Maxxie LaWow! With dazzling musical numbers and a celebration of LGBTQ+ joy and self-expression, Maxxie LaWow has already won five awards on the film festival circuit.

During his time at MSU, Anthony was an active member of the LGBTQ+ student groupโ€”back when the fight for visibility and support was shaped by the AIDS Crisis of the late โ€˜80s. Now, he's thrilled to return and share a film that champions authenticity, community, and the power of drag! After the screening, Anthony will host a live Q&A about the film and its journey.

And the best part? Tickets are just $5โ€”perfect for a student budget! The event also includes a live drag show featuring two fabulously talented local Lansing queens.

Doors open at 5 PM, the screening begins at 6 PM, and the event will be held at Stage One (2200 Lake Lansing Rd, Lansing). Join us for a night of animated q***r magic and celebration!

For more information and ticketing, visit: https://capitalcityfilmfest.com/event/maxxie-lawow-drag-super-shero

I hope to see a bunch of smiling q***r Spartan faces for the screening.

*MICHIGAN PREMIERE // DIRECTOR IN ATTENDANCE* When drag queens start disappearing, a shy young barista must summon his inner super-shero to rescue them โ€‹from an ambitious evil drag queen bent on harvesting their magical anti-aging tears.
