Rep. Borton calls Bowen’s bluff: No way sportsmen support fee increases

State Rep. Ken Borton today joined Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Director Scott Bowen in calling for Michigan hunters and fishermen, along with other outdoor enthusiasts, to be more engaged with the legislative process. Bowen recently criticized House Republicans for protecting Michigan residents from significant fee increases being pushed by the DNR.
During the latest Natural Resources Commission meeting, Bowen called for the Legislature to raise sportsmen license fees in order to fund the DNR. Bowen went further, throwing complaints at the state House for alleged “inaction” and calling for individuals to engage lawmakers.
“Director Bowen is right; we’d all be better off if more outdoorsmen engaged with state officials on issues that matter to them,” said Borton (R-Gaylord). “But after that, Director Bowen and I disagree on everything else. His assumption that hunters and fishers want to pay more to do the thing they love is as ridiculous as expecting Michigan boaters to pay a surcharge because the Great Lakes are pretty. It’s just not realistic. I sincerely hope that people across Michigan hear the director’s call and come to Lansing in droves. I’ve heard from these hunters and fishermen, and they do not want fee increases. Director Bowen is spiraling, and it just proves how woefully out of touch he and his department actually are.
“The DNR routinely mismanages its funding, and the director wants to fix it by squeezing more money out of our already declining number of sportsmen. It’s outrageous. This has nothing to do with ecological protection or wildlife preservation.”
Borton continued by highlighting the need for sportsmen to share their thoughts with their state representatives.
“Whether the director approves of it or not, we’re working in the House to protect the rights of Michigan’s sportsmen,” Borton said. “In my time in Lansing, I’ve never had a single person call and ask me to make them pay more to hunt or fish. The DNR needs to find a sensible way to generate funding that doesn’t put the burden on our sportsmen."

As we close out this 2026 snowmobile season, we want to thank all of our wonderful men and women who poured countless hours into trail grooming, maintenance, brushing and signing. A big thank you to two of our trail bosses,Mike and Archie, they are very instrumental in the day to day operations and ensuring trails are clear and groomed. Our trails wouldn’t be what they are without our great volunteers! We also greatly appreciate the private land owners who graciously let us cross their property to connect public lands and access our local businesses. We also thank our equipment manufacturers who help us with all resources when we need them!
This season was filled with trials and tribulations, part failures, crazy weather and we pulled through. It wasn’t as successful of a season as it should have been, but we survived. Our team has and will continue to improvise, adapt and overcome whatever is throw at them! Every situation that costs us time, we look back on what we could do better. We already have a punch card of items to get fixed and once the weather turns around we will start working toward the 2027 snowmobile season.
Make sure to head over to the Antrim County Snowmobile Club and East Jordan Trailblazers pages and check out the summer activities our clubs have going on and support their activities. One huge project will be the groomer barn ACSC is putting up this summer. If you can donate time, money or materials, it will help immensely to our team and equipment!

THANK YOU!

Thank you to Mike and Tom for blazing their way through the snow to get out and groom today! The valley and trails on the southern end of our system were groomed today.
Get out and ride before the next heat wave. If your riding, be very cautious that we have had a lot of wind, heavy snow and ice that could bring trees and other debris down into the trail.

Groomer games are coming soon! Check out how you can attend or support local snowmobile clubs

One last rip?! It’s a good possibility!

It appears Sunday into Monday will be the best snow for the weekend. Currently groomer coordinators are monitoring snowfall, weather and trail conditions for the next few days. At last inspection the valley had few spots getting thin with occasional standing and flowing water in a few places. 131 was thin but still snow covered. Southern trails still have a decent base but have got a good amount of rain saturated into them. Trails have remained hard and icy after the rain/meltdown and refreeze.
Saturday - head down to the The Hideaway Bar from 9-1 for groomer appreciation and then in the evening head back there for their annual customer appreciation party. We can thank them enough for their support of our operation!
We’d also like to thank Tim and Laurie Bingham for their donation from the bean pot they held. They continue to be great supporters of ours, THANK YOU!

The valley and south trails have been groomed in the last 24 hours. For some reason the groomer tracker in that machine isn’t working
Equipment - We’ve got parts engineered and are on the way for the JD out of Alba. They worked on it today, hopefully next couple days we can get that back on line.
Weather - Don’t look now but the rest of the season doesn’t look good. We’ll adjust grooming for the temperatures and conditions. Mid 40s and 50s don’t make it an easy job

Thanks for sticking with us this year! It’s been a tough year but we’ll get everything fixed up and regroup
