Who else thinks this looks like a ball of scrap mokume gane clay!

Jupiter's moon Io looks like it was painted by fire.

This is one of the sharpest images captured of Io in over 20 years — taken by NASA's Juno spacecraft during its closest flyby of the volcanic moon since 2001. Juno came within just 930 miles of the surface, revealing a world unlike anything else in our solar system.

Io is the most volcanically active body in the solar system — covered in hundreds of volcanoes, some sp3wing plumes of sulfur hundreds of miles into space. The colours you see aren't filters or artistic edits. That's real sulfur, lava, and volcanic ash painting the surface in shades of red, yellow, orange, and white.

While Earth has around 1,500 volcanoes, Io has over 400 that are actively er*pting — and Jupiter's immense gravity is the reason. The tidal forces from Jupiter essentially squeeze Io like a stress ball, generating enough heat to keep its interior permanently molten.
