Vernal pools may be small, but protecting them requires big-picture thinking. Join us on Wednesday at an engaging virtual Lunch & Learn to discover practical, science-based strategies for conserving these critical habitats while balancing development and land use goals.

This program is part of a larger series focused on Vernal Pools, funded by the Casco Bay Estuary Partnership's Community Grant Program. A big thank you for their support!

On Monday, our very own Operations Manager, Kim Van Zorge, had the exciting opportunity to assist the Biodiversity Research Institute (BRI) with banding, measuring, and sampling Bald Eagle nestlings. BRI's raptor program has studied these birds for over 20 years, using this data for long-term population monitoring, movement studies, and understanding the birds' exposure to environmental contaminants.

Thank you to BRI for the opportunity to see science in action!

Note: All birds are handled by trained biologists under appropriate permits and released unharmed.

This week's post is about the bald eagle!

"I arrived home to see a disturbance on the bay out front but too far out to distinguish matters with the naked eye. Grabbing my binocular I saw an immature bald eagle trying to lift something from the ocean. These birds have incredible lifting ability, able to carry up to half their 12 pound weight off the ground. But getting airborne from the water with a heavy meal is another matter since the bird has wet wings and little leverage to get moving. The eagle tried repeatedly with no success, finally going airborne without his prey. For over 30 minutes the eagle continued to circle the spot, often hovering before making a dive as if she just had to try one more time. Finally, near sunset the bird abandoned the effort. "

Last week, a dedicated team of volunteers from Harpswell Aging at Home (HAH) gathered on a sunny day at the HHLT office to create container gardens that will soon be delivered to local seniors. For those who may not have the space, mobility, or transportation needed to maintain a larger garden or reach a community plot, these containers will provide the chance to grow fresh tomatoes and peppers at home. The project was funded by HHLT's Community and School Garden Fund, established in 2005 by an anonymous donor to support community gardening projects. Thank you to HAH for bringing this great program to life year after year!
