Cundy’s Harbor along with Orr’s-Bailey Islands and the Harpswell Neck Fire Departments responded to a reported structure fire this morning at a littler before 6:00 on Gurnet Landing Road. The first responder on scene observed smoke emanating from the garage. Once more personnel and equipment arrived on scene, the interior was accessed where fire conditions were encountered and quickly knocked down. The interior of the garage and its contents suffered smoke and water damage though there was minimal damage to the living portions of the house. There were no injuries. The State Fire Marshal was requested to the scene to help determine the origin of the fire.

A big thank you to Orr’s-Bailey and the Harpswell Neck Fire Departments.

We don't have much in the way of signalized intersections in Harpswell, or any for that matter, but we do cancel other incoming units once we've verified they're not needed. We strive to do that as quickly and safely as possible to reduce risk to those on the road and our crews.

Ever seen a fire truck or ambulance flying down the road with lights flashing and sirens wailing, only for them to suddenly shut everything off, slow down, and just... blend back into traffic? 🚒💨 ➡️ 🚗
It looks a little suspicious, right? Like maybe they just used their sirens to cut the line at a red light? 🛑🤫
As juicy as that theory is, the reality is much less scandalous! Here is what’s actually happening behind the dashboard:
❌ We Got Canceled
First responders are dispatched based on the information available at the exact moment a 911 call comes in. While we are en route, police, dispatchers, or other crews who arrived on the scene first might realize the situation isn’t as severe as initially reported, or that they have enough help already. When they radio in to cancel us, we have to immediately “power down” and return to normal driving.
🚥 Why It Happens Right After an Intersection
Notice how we often shut the sirens off just after passing through a major intersection? That’s entirely for your safety!
If we are in the middle of clearing a busy intersection and suddenly get canceled, abruptly turning off our lights and sirens can confuse drivers who have already pulled over or stopped for us. To avoid traffic chaos and keep everyone safe, we will often maintain our emergency status until we safely clear the intersection, and then shut it down.
So, next time you see a first responder suddenly go quiet, don’t worry, they aren’t rushing to grab a coffee. It just means the emergency is under control, someone is safe, and we are heading back to the station to wait for the next call. 🫡
Drop a ❤️ if you learned something new today, and share this to bust the myth!

If you've ever considered becoming a firefighter, or want to explore it, but were hesitant to because of the time commitment required to go to the Fire Academy: tonight is the time. This class is 60 hours and is being run in-house right here in Harpswell. If you complete it, you will have the basic skills the State of Maine requires to become a qualified interior firefighter.

The planning meeting is at 6 pm tonight at the Orr's Island Schoolhouse.
