This is the photo we almost didn’t post.

March 2021. Johnny, out of an 18 hour surgery, tubes everywhere, fighting for his life while the rest of the world went about its day.

It’s not easy to look at. That’s the point.

Childhood cancer is ugly. It is frightening, relentless, and devastating, and it stays that way whether or not we choose to see it.

Every day in this country, 42 children are diagnosed with cancer. Cancer remains the #1 disease-related killer of children in America. 1 in 264 children will be diagnosed before the age of 20. And for those who survive, 2 out of 3 will live with a lifelong health condition because of their cancer or treatment.

Cancer does not discriminate.

Johnny wore 42. And he was one of them.

This September, during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, wear gold with us. Look at the hard pictures. Learn the statistics. Say their names. Share their stories. Give if you can.

Because these are not just numbers.

They are children. They are families. They are Johnny.

💛🎗️SEPTEMBER IS FOR REMEMBERING. SEPTEMBER IS FOR FIGHTING. 🎗️💛

September has always been a month that holds so much for us.

It is the month we celebrate Johnny’s birthday.
It is the month we light candles for him.
And it is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a month that asks us to shine those candles a little brighter for the children who are still here, still fighting, and still waiting for their miracle.

There is a hard kind of poetry in that.

The same month we light candles for Johnny, we get to fight for every child still in the fight.🕯️💛

Johnny’s story ended far too soon. But his story did not end without leaving something behind.

It left a reason to keep showing up.
A reason to keep giving.
A reason to keep fighting.
A reason to make sure children facing cancer and serious illness, and the families standing beside them, feel seen, supported, and never alone.

That is why we do what we do through the Johnny Kinney Memorial Foundation. That is why Johnny’s Closet exists. That is why we keep going.

Because childhood cancer doesn't take a month off.

So neither will we.

This September, light a candle for Johnny. Say his name. Remember his smile. And then help us shine that light toward a child who needs it today.🕯️

Because every child deserves the chance to grow up.
Every family deserves hope.
And every child fighting cancer deserves to know that the world is fighting right alongside them.

💛 🩷THIS is why we do what we do. 🩷💛

We wish we could show you the smile behind this story. We wish you could see the excitement on this young boy’s face as he went through each and every item that was chosen especially for him.

But we don’t ask for pictures. We don’t do what we do for recognition, for photographs, or for praise. We do it for the kids. ❤️

Recently, we were able to put together a special package for a teenage patient, filled with things we hoped would make him smile and some necessities. And then we received this message from the person who delivered it to him:

“He was SO excited… he said, ‘It’s like she knows me!’ … He was so grateful… it was so nice to see him smile.”

And honestly, those words mean everything to us. Because this is where your donations go.
Your support helps us bring a little happiness to a child who is going through something no child should ever have to face. It means a kid can forget, even if just for a little while, about hospital rooms, treatments, uncertainty and fear, and simply feel like a kid again.

When you donate to the Johnny Kinney Memorial Foundation, you are helping put a smile on the face of a child fighting for their life. You are reminding a child that they are seen. They are cared for. They are not alone. And sometimes, something as simple as a pair of jeans that fits perfectly, a favorite soccer book, a Coca-Cola shirt, or something connected to the team they love can mean more than we could ever explain.

We may not always be able to show you the faces behind what you make possible. But please know there are faces. There are smiles. There are moments of joy. And there are children who feel a little more loved because of you. 💛

Our favorite four-legged volunteer and Chief Package Inspector wanted to remind everyone that Tricky Tray donation season is in full swing at the JKMF! She's been keeping a close eye on the baskets coming in... but she assures us there's plenty more room for donations (and she's more than happy to supervise them all). 😂

Friday, September 4th will be a night that means so much to the JKMF family and to everyone who has loved and supported Johnny.

Join us at Hanover Park High School for the Johnny Kinney Memorial Youth Night Football Game as we celebrate the life, legacy, and spirit of Johnny.

This year carries an even deeper meaning. September 4th would have been Johnny's 18th birthday, and it also marks what should have been his senior year. While our hearts will always wonder what those moments would have looked like, we are incredibly grateful to honor him in a way that brings our community together.

To help celebrate the evening, a lovely group of people have created a commemorative Johnny Kinney Memorial Youth Night t-shirt which features his handwriting. If you'd like to wear one to the game and show your support, or just purchase one to have, they are available now through the link in the comments. Please note: shirts are available for local pickup only during the designated pickup dates and times.

Every shirt worn in the stands is a reminder that Johnny's light continues to shine and that his legacy lives on through kindness, love, and the incredible support of this community.
