Hampton Lifeguard Association’s (HLA) mission is to WATERPROOF LONG ISLAND’S SOUTH FORK.

HLA is a chapter of the United States Lifeguard Association (USLA) and a 501(c) (3) Non-profit Tax Exempt Organization. The programs HLA supports includes: Lifeguard Training Program (45th year) & Tournament Competition, Junior Lifeguard Program (24th year) & Tournament Competition, Volunteer Ocean Rescue Squad (15th year), East Hampton YMCA Hurricane Swim Club (19th year) and In-school Swim Programs.

Little swimmers, big summer memories! 🐠☀️

Our 2026 Nippers brought plenty of energy, enthusiasm and smiles to the beach this summer! Whether they were racing across the sand, taking on the waves or cheering on their friends, every moment was another opportunity to learn and grow.

Our youngest swimmers are taking their first steps toward becoming the next generation of lifeguards—and helping us waterproof the South Fork, one Nipper at a time! 💪

Introducing 𝗢𝗳𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿 ! 🛟 A new series celebrating the accomplishments and milestones of our lifeguard community beyond the beach.

We're kicking things off by congratulating John Ryan Sr., affectionately known as Big John, who was recently honored by the Town of East Hampton with a special proclamation celebrating his 91 years of life and contributions to our community!

From his dedication to lifeguarding to the lasting impact he's made on generations of East Hampton residents, Big John's legacy is one worth celebrating.

Congratulations, Big John, on this well-deserved recognition! 👏

𝙈𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙛: 𝘾𝙝𝙧𝙞𝙨 𝘾𝙞𝙣𝙦𝙪𝙚 🛟

Chris has spent 19 years lifeguarding in East Hampton, working his way up through the ranks during his first nine years before stepping into a leadership role. For the past decade, he has served as Montauk District Chief, helping lead and prepare the lifeguards protecting some of our busiest beaches. 🌊

His dedication to water safety extends beyond the stand through his work with East Hampton Town Marine Patrol. In 2024, Chris was also recognized as New York State Lifeguard of the Year—a well-deserved honor reflecting his commitment to lifeguarding and our community.

A little summer rewind to our Junior Lifeguards! ☀️

From ocean training to competition days and plenty of fun in between, this summer was all about building skills, confidence and friendships on the beach.

These are the moments that help shape the next generation of lifeguards—and keep us waterproofing the South Fork one Junior Lifeguard at a time. 💪

𝙈𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙛: 𝙅𝙚𝙛𝙛 𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙨𝙤𝙣 🛟

Jeff has been a lifeguard for more than 30 years, bringing a background in competitive swimming, coaching and water safety to East Hampton. After first coming to the area in 1999, he joined East Hampton Town’s leadership team in 2012 and now serves as Amagansett District Chief, overseeing operations at Indian Wells, Atlantic Avenue, Albert’s Landing and Maidstone.

From training and staff operations to certification, technology and PWC qualification, Jeff plays an important role in keeping our lifeguards prepared and our beaches running safely.

When he’s not on the beach, Jeff continues serving the community as a teacher at John Marshall.

During National Preparedness Month, we’re recognizing the lifeguards, Ocean Rescue members and water safety professionals who train diligently to be ready when emergencies happen.

From prevention and education to rescue training and emergency response, preparation helps keep our beaches and our community safer every day. 🌊

𝙈𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙛: 𝙅𝙤𝙝𝙣 𝙍𝙮𝙖𝙣 𝙅𝙧. 🛟

John Ryan Jr. began lifeguarding for the Town of East Hampton in 1981 and has served as Chief Lifeguard since 1991. Throughout his career, he has helped shape water safety on the East End—from establishing the Junior Lifeguard Program with his father, John Ryan Sr., to helping found East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue and the Hampton Lifeguard Association.

More than four decades later, John continues his commitment to education, training and competition, working to waterproof the South Fork and beyond.

East Hampton Volunteer Ocean Rescue is made up of dedicated volunteers who train year-round to respond to water emergencies and support open water safety throughout our community. EHVOR also works alongside HLA and the Town of East Hampton to support lifeguard training and youth water safety programs.

According to the United States Lifesaving Association, 112,451 rescues were performed in 2025 across 141 reporting agencies.

Behind every number is a lifeguard who was trained, prepared and ready to respond when seconds mattered. These numbers are a powerful reminder of the importance of lifeguards and continued water safety education.

Every rescue reinforces why we remain committed to training, education and waterproofing the South Fork—one swimmer at a time. 🌊
