Today, Marteen the adventure bean had a big appointment with the legendary Dr. Barrett at Fairfield Equine Associates to pull a cracked molar, and his person Jess Beckstrom welcomed me along for the ride 🥰 we left at the crack of dawn, loaded Marty and Cabbie (emotional support horse) easily thanks to Jess’ significant R+ training with trailering, and made our way to Newtown. The staff were excellent- organized, warm, and attentive. I was thrilled to observe the procedure and even got to “participate” by holding Marty’s tongue out of the way 😆 the tooth was not easy to get out, but between Dr. Barratt and an assist from tiny-handed Dr. Beckstrom, it finally gave up- one large chunk and two small shards that were nestled deep in the tissue. While Marty was waking up, we were treated to a facility tour and got to speak to several of the staff about their training and various roles at the hospital.
Of course, everyone was enamored by Marty- he makes friends everywhere he goes 💜 I’m super grateful for this learning opportunity and even more for boarders who trust me with the immense privilege of caring for their horses at the farm and beyond.
