Friday the 13th: Western civilization myths surround the date. It is unlucky to have 13 people at the dinner table and I have never been in a skyscraper or elevator with a floor named “13.” In Norse mythology the trickster god Loki arrived as the 13th guest at a dinner party; in the New Testament Judas Iscariot was the 13th to arrive at the Last Supper. Some people consider “13” as lucky and when it falls on a Friday, one of the luckiest days of the year. The movies have bolstered the evil superstition. Have a great Friday the 13th.

Happy Independence Day! Philadelphia printer John Dunlap sent out all the copies he made to newspapers across the 13 colonies, in addition to commanders of the Continental troops and local politicians. 26 copies survive today.
When one of the "Dunlap broadsides" arrived in New York City on July 9, 1776, George Washington, who was the commander of the Continental forces in New York at the time, read the document to the crowd in front of city hall. Many of them cheered and would later tear down a statue of King George III nearby. The statue was later melted down and used to make tens of thousands of musket balls for the American army.
