Here is our big news!
Beginning September 2026, YWCA of the Greater Capital Region will be the new home to Creative Action Unlimited (CAU), the Capital Region’s foremost social justice theatre company. In eleven years, CAU has produced 23 original stage and film productions addressing a wide spectrum of social issues including racism, classism, homelessness, addiction, totalitarianism, gender identity and more. In addition, CAU created, sustains and promotes the Social Justice Artists Collective, an expanding group of regional artists from varied disciplines whose artistic work intersects with social justice.
YWCA of the Greater Capital Region is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. YWCA-GCR is home to 104 women and over 50 children every single day, who would otherwise be homeless or living in substandard housing.
Starletta Renee, Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA-GCR, spoke recently about the importance of supporting social justice artists:
“We are living through a time when artists, particularly Black artists and women artists, face shrinking opportunities, disappearing funding, and increasing pressure to make themselves smaller. To become quieter. To be less challenging. Less truthful. Less visible.
But there are artists who refuse. Artists who continue creating healing spaces, asking difficult questions, and telling stories that remind us of our shared humanity.
If we truly believe that art belongs at the center of justice, then we have a responsibility. We cannot simply celebrate artists after they have poured themselves into our communities.
We must invest in them, stand beside them, and ensure they know they have a place where their voices are welcomed, valued, protected, and heard.”
