ENDANGERED NO MORE ๐Ÿข

Green sea turtles have made an incredible comeback โ€” theyโ€™re no longer considered at risk of extinction.

Exciting news!!!

Some news to brighten your day: After centuries of being hunted, shelled, eaten, and generally destroyed by colonial greed and industrialization, green sea turtles are finally being removed from the endangered species list.

Such a fantastic rescue by our local Turtle and wildlife groups! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Such a fantastic rescue by our local Turtle and wildlife groups! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Last week, our Sea Turtle Hotline received a call from New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance about a stranded Leatherback sea turtle near Uncle Timโ€™s Bridge in Wellfleet. What followed was an incredible nighttime rescue effort with collaboration from Mass Audubon, ifaw, and the New England Aquarium.

๐Ÿ”ฆ In the dark and guided only by headlamps, Mass Audubon and IFAW teams โ€” over a dozen staff and volunteers โ€” worked together to load the massive turtle into IFAWโ€™s Mobile Dolphin Rescue Clinic, and assess its condition. Rescuers were excited to discover that the turtle had been tagged in Trinidadโ€”traveling thousands of miles to Cape Cod Bayโ€” and weighed in at an estimated 700 pounds. After a full check-up, the turtle was released back into the ocean at Herring Cove Beach around 11 pm, 5 hours after the initial call came in.

๐Ÿ’™ Huge thanks to IFAW, NECWA, and all the dedicated partners across the Cape who help protect marine wildlife. This rescue was teamwork at its best!

Last month, Dr. Marcelino was able to collecf all of the eggs from a Learherback Sea Tirtle nest.

This is highly important, as Learherbakcs are considered a Vulnerable Species. They arenโ€™t listed as Endangered anymore, because of all the efforts of environmental conservation and protection that has taken place.

Please pray for the communities on the southern Oaxaca Coast, as Hurricane Erik passes through from Zipolite to Palmarito.

Dr. Marcelino went to the beaches of Caclote to collect some turtle nests, to protect them through the storm.

Below are pictures of the nests, these are Eastern Pacific Green Sea Turtles.

Do You Know What Today is?!

WORLD SEA TURTLE DAY!

Here's a small reminder as to why Sea Turtles are so important:
- they play a vital role in the health and balance of marine life and its ecosystem
- maintaining sea grass beds, as a main food source so the seagrass does not overgrow
- Hawksbill turtles help maintain/protect coral reefs by eating sponges (which can destroy the reefs)
- Leatherback Turtles help controll jelly fish population, which then helps certain species of fish as jellyfish can harm fish
- The nutrients from when sea turtles lay eggs on beaches actually help sand dune vegetation grow, which helps prevent erosion

The Palmarito Sea Turtle Rescue had built this turtle nest corral on an island adjacent to Palmarito Beach. There are a couple of families who live on the island, who help us patrol and bring nests to the corral.

There is also a little restaurant that tour guides on Manialtepec will take visitors to during their bird tours, or ecotours. ๐Ÿข
