Lumpkin County, between 1921 and 1924…A group of miners pause long enough for a photograph at a mining site along the Dahlonega-Gainesville Highway. Among those identified are George Christy, Jodie Townsend (or Young Abercrombie), Clive Satterfield with pick in hand, and Captain Riley.

While the great Georgia Gold Rush had faded into history by this time, the mountains of Lumpkin County still yielded enough promise to keep men at work. Surrounded by ore bins, rough-hewn buildings, wagons, and mules, these workers carried on a tradition that began when the first gold discoveries brought thousands of prospectors to North Georgia in the 1830s. Their labor helped preserve Dahlonega's identity as the birthplace of America's first major gold rush.

The Dahlonega Mint, established in 1838, struck more than $6 million in gold coins before closing during the Civil War—making Lumpkin County one of the most important gold-producing regions in the eastern United States.

Stone Mountain has a long, complex history. It's home to the Confederate Memorial Carving, which is the largest high relief sculpture in the world. The Stone Mountain Memorial Association (SMMA) is responsible for the park. The State of Georgia authority is self-supporting and gets no tax dollars. This 1937 photo shows a car approaching the mountain via dirt road.

Why It’s “Women Veterans Recognition Day” – Not “Women Veterans Day”

On June 12th, we celebrate women Veterans and honor their incredible contributions, but it’s important to recognize the true meaning of the date and its official name.

June 12, 1948 marked a turning point in history: The signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act granted women the right to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. Armed Forces. That’s why we honor Women Veterans Recognition Day.

Today, and every day, let’s celebrate service, remember history, and continue to uplift stories.
