We deeply regret to inform our Lodge 59 Brothers and Sisters of the passing of Lifetime Member and Retired Sergeant, Walter Leonard, at the age of 77 years.

Brother Leonard was hired by the East Chicago Police Department in March of 1973 and served for over twenty (20) plus years, while donning badge number 340 during his career. He served in the capacities of Patrol Officer, Patrol Sergeant and Head of the Traffic Division.

On behalf of the executive board, we extend our deepest gratitude for the members unwavering support and commitment throughout our tenure. It has been an immense privilege to serve as your leaders these past years. As our term concludes at the end of 2024, we've made the thoughtful decision not to seek re-election in 2025. This wasn't an easy choice; we've genuinely valued the opportunity to contribute to the lodge's success and have been deeply moved by the encouragement we've received to continue. However, we firmly believe that a transition to new leadership is vital for the lodge's continued growth We look forward to continuing our involvement in the lodge as members, and we are excited to witness the lodge's continued journey toward excellence.

We would like to thank all members of this FOP, their families, friends, US congressman, US senators and all who help supported the Social Security Fairness Act, which would eliminate two federal policies that prevent nearly 3 million people, including police officers, firefighters, teachers and postal workers from collecting their full social security benefits. THANK YOU from all of US and HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

It was brought to our attention that brother John Byich, has passed away on September 5, 2024, and will be missed for his years of dedication, service and friendship he bestowed upon all of us at our East Chicago Lodge 59. May he walk in eternal life and continue to be protected by St. Michael in his next steps in eternal life.
