🚨 EAST CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT — PRESS RELEASE 🚨

Shooting Investigation

The East Chicago Police Department is investigating an incident captured on video in which an individual was observed firing a handgun at a vehicle.

On Monday, August 31, 2026, at approximately 9:45 PM, our Uniform Patrol Division responded immediately to the reported incident. Officers quickly located and apprehended three individuals believed to be involved in the incident.

During the investigation, officers also recovered fi****ms believed to be connected to the incident.

The case has been turned over to our Criminal Investigation Division, which is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Detectives will determine the facts of the case and, in consultation with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office when appropriate, determine what criminal charges, if any, are warranted.

All individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The East Chicago Police Department would like to commend our Uniform Patrol officers for their immediate response and swift apprehension of the individuals involved.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available and as permitted by law.

Although the wildfires may be hundreds of miles away, the smoke can still affect the air we breathe here in East Chicago. Even when you can't see the smoke, harmful particles may still be present and can impact your health.

To help protect yourself and your family: • Check the Air Quality Index before spending time outdoors.

• Limit outdoor activities if air quality is poor.
• Keep windows and doors closed when possible.
• Use air conditioning or a HEPA air purifier if available.
• Pay close attention to children, older adults, pregnant women, and anyone with asthma, COPD, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions.

Let's continue looking out for one another by checking on neighbors, family members, and those who may be more vulnerable during periods of poor air quality.
