Indian Cultural Society of East Brunswick

Indian Cultural Society of East Brunswick ICS provides a platform for culture, philanthropy & community in NJ

Established in 1999, the Indian Cultural Society of East Brunswick evolved out of a need for members of the Indian community in and around East Brunswick to have a platform to gather and celebrate cultural events and holidays, and promote cultural awareness. It provides families of Indian origin - and those with interest in India - avenues to celebrate and share in its diversity and to stay connec

ted to its traditions, heritage, and innovations. Through regular social and cultural events and volunteer activities, this organization creates a forum to create fellowship among its members and foster strong relationships in the community.

East Brunswick Public Library, in collaboration with the Indian Cultural Society of East Brunswick (ICS), AAPI, and North Brunswick Free Public Library, hosted a reading and discussion of Men Like Ours by Bindu Bansinath. The reading was followed by a Q&A session moderated by ICS President Shilpi Mahajan and an engaging audience discussion.

Men Like Ours beautifully captures the complexities of the South Asian immigrant woman’s experience—exploring themes of identity, belonging, family, silence, and resilience with remarkable depth and authenticity. The conversation sparked meaningful reflections and resonated deeply with attendees. It also spoke about the silent toll of trauma while exploring societal structures that make conversations like these difficult.

Some comments - Wow, I could deeply relate to every word you read.

This resonated with me.

Communities that come together through shared experiences like these, stay together. Thank you Bindu!

What happens when a library, mental health advocates, artists, healthcare professionals, and a community come together? Unspoken.

We are deeply grateful to the East Brunswick Public Library (EBPL) for partnering with us to create a space where conversations around mental health could unfold with honesty, courage, and compassion.

From the powerful and deeply moving performances by Latika and Meghna, to the spoken word poetry by Shilpi, every artistic expression gave voice to emotions that are often left unsaid.

The “Soliloquies of the Mind” segment invited us into the inner landscapes of struggle, resilience, hope, and healing, reminding us that none of us are alone in our experiences. Thank you Anand Rao for curating these and to our actors Suvendu. Kinnary, Debjani, Jay, Sasha and Veda for delivering it with so much honesty.

To our neurodiverse talent, Ishan, you stole everyone’s heart.

Our heartfelt thanks to our incredible panelists for sharing their expertise, lived experiences, and wisdom during an engaging and thought-provoking discussion that challenged stigma and encouraged understanding.

Last but not the least, special thanks to .s.anand for being such a wonderful emcee.

Yay to ICS committee, Shilpi, and .s.anand - the supertrio.

A special shoutout to ex ICS President who showed up and supported the effort through her presence and powerful performance.

A special thank you to our collaborators and supporters:
💚 EBPL
💚 NAMI
💚 SAMHIN
💚 AAPI

And to every attendee who listened, reflected, shared, and showed up—thank you for helping create a community where difficult conversations can happen with empathy and without judgment.

Some stories are spoken.
Some are danced.
Some are written.
And some remain unspoken.

Together, we made space for all of them.
