We were thrilled to welcome School on Wheels MA founder , who recently spent a Sunday volunteering alongside her Confirmation Class from Covenant Congregational Church North Easton Ma.

The group customized backpacks by grade level, helping to ensure students start the 2026-27 school year with the supplies they need to succeed.

In 2004, Cheryl began assembling backpacks at her kitchen table and delivering to a dozen children living in two Brockton-area family shelters.

Today, thanks to the support of volunteers, donors, and community partners, SOWMA distributes more than 11,000 backpacks annually to students throughout Massachusetts.

Along the way, Cheryl developed our tutoring and mentoring programs, helping students build confidence, resilience, and brighter futures.

Thank you, Cheryl, for planting the seed that continues to grow!

Looking for a meaningful way to spend time this summer? Gather your family, friends, coworkers, or community group and join us as a volunteer.

“Every backpack carries far more than school supplies,” said Community Outreach Director Barbara Fox. “It carries encouragement, opportunity, and a reminder that an entire community is cheering a child on,” she added. 🎒✨

Students like Shauna are diving into summer with reading bags filled with crafts and books, including the timeless adventures of Nancy Drew, a character who still inspires curiosity and problem-solving.

This tutoring session hit all the right notes!

Students spent part of the afternoon learning STEM engineering principles, then moved to the piano to explore rhythm.

Science teaches that strong structures come from small connections. Music teaches that a few simple notes can become something beautiful.

Turns out the secret formula for a great afternoon is equal parts STEM, music and marshmallows!
