We got to help burn a spot at Grand Portage that hadn’t seen fire since 1932.

It’s also an area that my friend’s grandma use to take him to gather blueberries.

We used a torch dipped in white pine and white spruce resin, cattails, and bits of paper birch to start part of that burn.

Miinan (blueberries) 🫐 need fire. Old ways and new methods working together, returning a practice that was never meant to be lost.

Chi miigwech to the Grand Portage Band and Erik Carlson for trusting us to be part of this work 🔥

Yesterday at Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve, something happened that will stay with me for a long time.

A little native girl named Rylee, whose family is from this area, lit a fire with a torch dipped in white spruce resin and birch bark paper. Probably the first Indigenous person to light a fire on this land in over 100 years.

Hope Flanagan and I had the privilege of leading a session on Indigenous fire stewardship, the role fire plays not just as a land management tool, but as a living relative.

This is what it looks like when a community shows up for the land and for each other.

Miigwech to Cedar Creek, FreshWater, and every person who came out yesterday. See you at the next one 🔥🫐

Omakakii means frog 🐸 in the Anishinaabe language.

I chose that name for the LLC because of my daughter, who was born two years ago on Leap day. She came early but she was ready to be apart of our world✨
