Walking south through Kuhn’s Woods, formerly known as Lafayette Park, these first two photos were captured in early spring and summer. Did you know the railroad tracks connecting East Berlin to Abbottstown were removed from this spot back in 1940? The next East Berlin Parks & Rec Commission meeting is Thursday, February 13 at 7PM at the borough office. Please attend and ask questions about Kuhn’s Woods. Information can be posted on social media, but face to face is a healthier and more neighborly way to learn facts and discuss them. We hope to see you there!

Info on Kuhn’s Woods:

Grants have been awarded to the borough to hire a landscape architect to develop a plan for a passive, green park on land that the borough acquired many years ago that is now overgrown and inaccessible. Yes, cleaned up, it would have a trail loop, minimal parking and basic signage, but it would have no other infrastructure such as playground equipment, playing fields, etc. It compliments the existing community park. This land also supports borough storm management since it borders Conewago Creek.

The other small project adjacent to Kuhn’s Woods is a small rail trail that could be connected to a longer one if there is support for one in the future. East Berlin is fortunate to have so much green space for such a small community.

Yes, the commitment of the borough to this project means that they are also committed to maintenance, but the costs would not approach what a developed park like the community park entails. No lawn mowing, no equipment repairs, etc. A Friends of East Berlin Parks group, such as those established in other communities, could help maintain both parks in partnership with the borough’s parks and recreation commission.
