Missisquoi River Basin Association

Missisquoi River Basin Association The Missisquoi River Basin Association (MRBA) is dedicated to the restoration of the Missisquoi River, its tributaries, and the Missisquoi Bay

MRBA restores stream habitat and prevents erosion by planting trees. Since 1997, MRBA and volunteers have planted over 22,000 trees on over 190 acres. Agricultural runoff and streambank erosion can wash nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus downstream and cause toxic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms in Missisquoi Bay. To monitor nutrient loading and identify priority projects, MRBA has tes

ted water samples for phosphorous and nitrogen levels since 2005. MRBA partners with local schools to teach students about our watershed and how to take care of our water.

Did you know that Vermont is home to seven native turtle species ? Pictured here is the painted turtle. This is our most commonly seen turtle and in 1994 it was designated as the state reptile 🐢

Although the painted turtle currently has a strong population in Vermont, the species does face threats such as habitat loss, road mortality, and invasive species threatening fragile ecosystems.

To protect our turtle friends, be sure to drive slowly and carefully on roads where turtles may be common and get involved with local organizations working to protect the turtles habitat!

Large amounts of rainfall are certainly making the rivers flow! 🌊

It is best to avoid all rivers and stream during and immediately after a heavy rain.

Wait at least 48 hours after a rain event to go swimming as rain floodwaters can be contaminated with runoff and sewage.

Stay safe & smart out there!

In May, our AmeriCorps members Ruby and Natalie took a storm water management class offered through Winooski NRCD, Stone Environmental and Lake Champlain Sea Grant.

After two virtual classes, Ruby and Natalie headed to Yestermorrow Design/Build School to get some hands on experience building a bio retention basin.

Filled with a layer of pure sand, a layer of organic material, and a layer of pea gravel, native grasses were planted on top to help soak up the water and stabilize the soil.

It was a great learning opportunity and we want to thank all those who made it possible!

We had a great start to June here at the MRBA! This past Monday 6/1 we hosted a half day field trip for 4th & 5th grade students from Newport Town School.

Students rotated through four stations and learned about how rain falls across different landscapes, deepened their understanding of maps and where they are in the watershed, collected bugs from the stream, and discovered all the wonderful things that live in dirt 🪱

It was a fantastic morning 😄

The field trip was hosted at the site of our dam removal where these same students helped us plant trees in April!

If you are an educator in the Missisquoi Watershed and would be interested in having MRBA host educational programs with your class please reach out to [email protected]
