The Highland Lake Protective Association The HLPA welcomes all members of the community who are interested in protecting and celebrating the beauty of Highland Lake.

The HLPA welcomes all members of the community who are interested in protecting and celebrating the beauty of Highland Lake, particularly those living within its watershed. Not just impacted by shoreline activities, any activity within the defined watershed boundaries of Highland Lake can ultimately impact water quality. Membership in the HLPA is a good way to get to know your fellow lake residents and demonstrate your support for keeping Highland Lake a clean, safe and healthy place to live and play. The HLPA Board thanks you for your past support, and hope you plan on renewing your membership for 2016-17. What your membership supports:

The HLPA runs a volunteer water monitoring program to closely follow the quality of our lake water where samples are collected monthly and driven to the DES lab in Concord for testing. We provide and maintain the Porta-Potty by the boat launch. We support protection of our loons and bald eagles, and encourage invasive w**d monitoring programs.

We’ve got some extra fun planned for our Ice Cream Social!! Rain or shine we can’t wait to celebrate with you!

Holiday events Schedule:

ICE CREAM SOCIAL - Thurs. July 3rd, 7:00-8:00 pm at East Andover Fire Station, Channel Rd.

FLARE LIGHTING - Thurs. July 3rd, 9:00 pm sharp. Obtain flares from Beth Frost on Maple St, or Earle Davis on W Shore Drive starting at 4 pm July 3rd or at the Ice Cream Social event at 7 pm.

BOAT PARADE - Friday, July 4th at 4:00 pm, starting on the West Shore

Ice out was officially declared on Sunday April 6th! Temps around 50, cloudy and light breeze. Several large ice flows remain around the southern end of the lake as of Monday April 7, but by definition, you could “travel by boat from north shore to south shire and east shore to west shore unimpeded by ice”.
Additionally, over the last few days, the geese, loons and eagles have akl returned to the lake.

During July’s lake water testing, Sara Steiner (VLAP Coordinator
Watershed Management Bureau
Water Division, NHDES) accompanied volunteer Earle Davis for the biannual biologist visit. He pointed out to Sarah some odd looking w**ds near the dam in the channel, so she took samples to be tested by Amy Smagula,
Limnologist/Exotic Species Program Coordinator for NHDES. Following are key excerpts from Amy Smagulas response:

…”Just a heads up that you were correct, that is variable milfoil in the outlet channel of Highland Lake in Andover, above their dam. It looks like it has been there for 1-3 years based on distribution and the fact that some of it is flowering. I did survey the whole lake shoreline and island shoreline, and the growth is just in the outlet, between the boat launch and the dam, though there are a few plants outside of that in the channel. I did not find anything in the lake proper.

I have a diver going in for the next couple of weeks to harvest the plants in Highland, to reduce risk to downstream systems. I will pay for this with state funds. I’ll let you know of the progress after work progresses.

I have sent an email to W**d Watchers on Webster Lake downstream to be alert to this, and to step up their W**d Watcher efforts.”

It is good news that variable milfoil was discovered and found to be isolated within a small area, and small enough that the state has funding to take care of it promptly. So be aware if you see activity in the area of the dam in the next few weeks, that is what they are doing. For more info on variable milfoil:

Saturday July 1st - Informal fireworks displays around the lake by residents (some Sun/Mon too?)

Monday July 3rd - 7:00-8:00 p.m: Ice Cream Social - EA Fire Station. $6.00 per Sundae

Monday July 3rd - 9:00 p.m: Lighting of the Flares

Tuesday July 4th - 4:00 p.m: Boat Parade around Highland Lake, starting on the west shore (open theme).

Flares will be delivered on or before July 3rd by Beth Frost or Earle Davis. $6.00 each or 4 for $20.00. Order flares by emailing us at [email protected], or contact us directly.

We no longer require annual dues, but donations to HLPA in support of community donations, lake water testing, porta potty rental and more are greatly appreciated!
