Alfred J Jurek American Legion Post #1672 Since our founding in 1949, the Alfred J. Jurek American Legion Post #1672 has endeavored to support our local veterans and their community.

The Post is named after Marine Pvt Alfred J. Jurek who was killed in action on Iwo Jima in February 1945. Our meetings are on the third Monday of every month and are open to any interested veterans.

The American Legion Department of New York Leadership Team, including Commander John R. Miga, visited the Eighth District on Feb 13th. A dinner in their honor was hosted by the George F. Lamm Post #622 in Williamsville. Several members of the Jurek Post attended.

Community Service Hours
If you know a student in the area who is looking to log some community service hours, please consider directing them to the Jurek Post's monthly pancake breakfast. We veterans are very grateful for our many supporters and are always looking for help to ensure that our guests have an enjoyable dining experience. Available tasks include bussing tables, serving coffee, washing/drying dishes, etc. Four to five hours of volunteer time is available per event.

At the Amherst Town Board meeting that was held on Monday, November 10th, the Town issued a proclamation recognizing Veterans Day and the work of local veterans, including the Town of Amherst Veterans Committee, the NYS Department of Veterans’ Services, and local veterans posts. The proclamation was read by council-member Jacqualine Berger and a copy of the proclamation was presented to representatives of the various veterans organizations in Amherst including Joe Orzechowski, commander of the Alfred J. Jurek Post.

American Legion National Commander Dan K. Wiley, accompanied by a number of distinguished guests from the Legion's National and Department levels, visited the 8th District of New York on October 10, 2025. He was hosted by the Samuel L Derby Post #556 in Frewsburg NY. A number of Legion members from Erie County made the trip to Frewsburg to attend the dinner for the National Commander. After the dinner, gifts to support the National Commander's project were presented by a number of attendees including Jurek Post Commander Joe Orzechowski. Following the festivities, members of the Erie County contingent joined National Commander Wiley in a group photo. Jurek Post members include Past Department Commander Tim Van Patten (3rd from left), Post Commander Joe Orzechowski (4th from right) and Post Finance Officer John Siefert (2nd from right).

The Jurek Post Rifle Team once again participated in the annual Amherst Veterans Memorial name unveiling ceremony on August 17th at the Amherst State Park on Mill St. Team members Bill Vincent, Alan Meyers, and Charlie Prell fired the three-volley salute at the end of the ceremony. The ceremony recognizes and honors those Amherst veterans whose names have been newly added to the memorial. Among this year’s honorees was Jurek Post Past Commander John McCadden.
