Driveway Access for Emergency Vehicles
Emergency personnel strive to respond to calls promptly, often navigating challenging terrain. Ensuring access for emergency vehicles enhances safety for homeowners and their families by facilitating a more efficient response from firefighters and other emergency responders.
Ambulances and fire trucks are generally wider, longer, and taller than personal vehicles. Many of these emergency vehicles have radio antennas and other equipment mounted on their roofs, which can be damaged by low-hanging tree limbs. In some cases, these branches may even prevent emergency vehicles from reaching your home entirely.
**Driveway Width and Height**
To ensure that emergency vehicles can safely access your property, your driveway must have a clean, dry all-weather surface that can support large, heavy vehicles. Here are some requirements to consider:
- Driveways should have an unobstructed vertical clearance of 15 feet. This may involve trimming or removing trees and brush to achieve the necessary height.
- Driveways should provide a minimally drivable surface width of 12 feet, with an additional 2-foot clear zone on each side, totaling 16 feet. This may require clearing away rocks and other obstacles to maintain adequate horizontal clearance.
- Sharp turns should be avoided; the minimum turning radius for a driveway should be 30 feet.
- Avoid steep hills over 7% grade especially if it is a gravel surface
It is in your best interest to ensure that emergency vehicles can access your property. If a vehicle cannot safely enter and exit, it may result in critical delays during an emergency response.
