🚨DEADLINE CHANGE - 16th August, Wednesday

We’re onboarding passionate volunteers to join our team for our flagship project - Green Hikes.

Green Hikes is a series of clean-up + experiential hikes being organised with youth school participants. Besides the clean-up of the trail, the project aims to take the participants on an inspiring journey interspersed with activities and meaningful conversations which we hope will leave them motivated to discover what environmentalism means to them + champion the climate cause themselves and inspire their peers too. It is a climate workshop but on the trails!

We’re onboarding for the following three roles:

🍃Hike Leaders
🍃Project Leader on Ground
🍃Social Media

On the occasion of GNH day in Bhutan today, we take a look at how GNH, a policy unique to Bhutan amplifies its environmental values.
Well how did Bhutan become the only Carbon ‘Negative’ country in the world? - GNH has a crucial role to play!

After GNH became the leading framework of Bhutan in 1972, environment protection became a top priority. Environment Conservation marked its place in both the domains and pillars of GNH. Bhutan was the first country to make such a shift and became the first country to become carbon negative.

About 70% of Bhutan is covered by trees and this amount of tree coverage has seen the country become a carbon sink. Bhutan's forests have the capacity to absorb millions of tons of carbon dioxide annually. The hydroelectric power generated from it's rivers also counteracts Bhutan's contribution towards carbon emissions each year. The Constitution also mandates that at least 60% of the country must remain forested at all times to come.

It was due to His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck’s pioneering initiatives on environmental policies that Bhutan is one of the few countries where the natural environment remains largely intact in spite of development activities and population growth. Through GNH, we’re able to maintain this very standard of being the ‘only’ carbon negative country in the world. And today, we strive to maintain this standard for all times to come. 🌱

Take a moment to reflect; what does sustainability mean to you and how does it manifest in your daily life and choices?🦋

Though there is privilege associated with always being able to make a ‘sustainable choice’ (which can pan out in various ways like having the privilege of choice, the privilege of time to commit to living a ‘fully’ sustainability lifestyle among the rest) but it’s also important to liberate sustainability from perfectionist views of environmentalism. The essence of sustainability lies in its diversity✨

From a lifestyle perspective too; we might be tricked to think that replacing all that we have with more ‘eco-friendly’ options is a sustainable step, but it besides being an expensive and inaccessible option for many, can also often escalate the original issues of pollution and incorrect recycling. Embrace the fact that using what you have already for longer periods is certainly one of the most sustainable options. 🌱

It’s therefore important to unbox sustainability, steer away from misconceptions that portray sustainability as squarely ‘going green’, embrace its interconnectedness and also the simplicity of its meaning at core.

Greetings! We’re starting our Facebook dedicated bi-weekly series called “The back to World Series”, where beginning of the week we will suggest you a handful of ways you can reduce your personal plastic waste and step back into the world after your weekend a little more eco-consciously.

🍃Living sustainably seldom implies spending a lot of money is buying accessories and essentials deemed ‘sustainable’. However we totally understand that not all times are we in a position to make an eco-conscious choice due to lack of time, choice or resources among the others at that instance. But any and all efforts made at an individual level to protect the environment around us has the power to steer a change too!

🍃We hope you take a little time to reflect on the list we have curated for you for this week. Taking and advocating for these little actions can go a long way. We would love to hear down in the comments if you’ve taken these steps end of the week!

✨Remember, the change starts with you✨

Hi!! We are the Facebook wing of our youth led environmental group Earthling which has its ground efforts based in India and Bhutan!🍃

Using sensitisation as our pillar for action; we strive to advocate for environmental sustainability with a focus on accessibility + inclusivity in the sustainability space.

We also aim to sensitise people about the need for conservation of mountain ecosystems and their role in it, while exploring the intersections of mountain environments and the downstream world; and why they are a reason for the whole world thriving at the moment.

We hope to achieve this through direct ground action, campaigns + advocacy and have been working and executing projects under our focal causes both virtually in India and on-ground in Bhutan for the past few months.

In the end; employing our passion and privilege, we just want to add to the continued inspiring efforts made by activists, organisations and communities in our little ways by working and advocating for these causes we strongly resonate to under the environmental umbrella✨

We are grateful to you for hopping on this journey with us on our page, we hope to together grow, learn, unlearn, deconstruct our biases and strive to be catalysts of positive change✨🦋
