CASA in the Heart of Texas Challenges, Give the Gift of Advocacy Now
CASA in the Heart of Texas trains and supports quality volunteers who speak out for the best interests of abused and neglected children in court in an effort to find each child a safe, permanent, nurturing home. Being a CASA volunteer (guardian ad litem) is a uniquely awesome volunteer opportunity and privilege. Every child who comes into care should have a CASA volunteer to stand by them as they go through this difficult and critical time. Aside from the trauma these children have already known, there is an unfathomable additional trauma that accompanies being removed from their homes -- even if it is to save their very lives. Having a safe, caring, consistent adult presence throughout their time in care is an invaluable gift to these children, which no child in care should be denied. The number of children being removed from their homes and placed in care has been increasing significantly the past several years and is still outpacing the number of caring adults coming forward to be trained and put to work as Court Appointed Special Advocates for them. The disparity between children in care and volunteers available for them is something we are committed to change, but we need help.
At CASA we know that not every single adult who cares about children can be a CASA volunteer, so we are starting a new category of volunteers: CASA Crusaders. These are the people that love our mission and want to help further it in any way they can (other than being an advocate). These volunteers will help bear our standard in the community by helping with awareness projects, helping us to make connections with others who could volunteer as CASAs, serve on our Board of Directors, donate to meet our financial needs, and a variety of other things. CASA Crusaders can help us find places where we can speak and educate about CASA and maybe even do some speaking themselves. They might help us find donations for meals while we are training a new group of CASA volunteer advocates or help us find venues for meetings or events. Some might want to make refreshments for in-service training meetings or for CASA Mixers, where we are trying to meet people who might be interested in our mission. They might take fliers around town to advertise an information session or other upcoming event. Some might help in the office from time to time. Crusaders will be a group whose phones we can call if we need assistance with something/anything, other than being an advocate. One might have a gift for party planning and decorating, one might be highly computer savvy and allow us to call when we need IT-type help, while another might love to make a congratulatory decorated cake for a reception for new volunteers after they are Sworn-In by the presiding Judge or for a volunteer appreciation event. Iโm sure we have yet to think of all the ways individuals in this auxiliary group might be able to help. We just know that there are people out there who want to help in our mission but for whatever reason at this time, cannot be a court appointed special advocate. If you are either someone who wants to be a CASA volunteer or someone who wants to support the mission in other ways, please contact CASA in the Heart of Texas. The next Pre-Service Training Class for New Advocates begins Monday, January 14th. CASA 101: Information Sessions are held the First Tuesday of the month at 901 Avenue B (Community Connections of Central Texas) in Brownwood at 6:00 PM.
