The Winterset Rotary Club is proud to donate $500 to Bricker Price Block in support of their summer camps. Our Earlham Interact students coordinated a photo opportunity with Allissa Johnson, and Interact Teacher Adviser Logan Tekolste made sure it happened. Here is Interactor Brooklyn Fager with Allissa. We’re grateful to support such a wonderful initiative for youth and families in Madison County. If you’ve ever wanted to give back to your community in a volunteer way, Rotary and Interact offer great opportunities to get involved.

👏🏼👏🏼Big thanks to Simon Welding for donating their time and labor to sand down the handrail around the maze today! Rotarian Trevor Simon kicked off this tedious project on Saturday but wasn’t able to finish, so he sent his crew to complete the task today.
Now it’s prepped and ready for Husky Help Day volunteers to paint! The handrail was originally fabricated in the late ’90s by Randy Simon of Simon Welding,Trevor was even one of the welders on it back then.
It truly takes a team to keep the city maze looking as good as it does. Thanks again to the Simon Welding crew!

The Ferst Readers of Madison County Community Action Team (CAT) is excited to announce an important achievement: since launching in October 2021 as Iowa’s first Ferst Readers nonprofit, more than 10,000 books have been distributed to children across Madison County. As of today, 320 children receive a Ferst Readers book each month, and the CAT’s goal is to increase that number to 400 by 2027. The CAT leads both child enrollment and the fundraising efforts that make this program possible.

Each month, every child residing in Madison County from birth until their fifth birthday can receive a free, age appropriate book. Books arrive addressed directly to the child and include a parent newsletter with vocabulary, questions, and activities that help families extend the story beyond the book.

Ferst Readers introduces books at the earliest stages of life. Reading regularly with a child from birth has a powerful impact on brain development. Children who are read to consistently have vocabularies three times larger by age five than those who are not, giving them a strong advantage when they begin school. These bookstore quality books explore numbers, colors, letters, concepts, animals, and more, encouraging conversation and connection between children and their families. Research shows that the strongest predictor of future academic success is the number of words a child hears and the amount of time adults spend actively engaging with them from birth to age three.

The program currently invests just over $1,100 each month to provide books to 320 children, funded entirely through the generosity of residents, civic groups, businesses, churches, and grants. You can find updates and community highlights on Facebook at facebook.com/FerstReadersMadisonCountyIowa

Families can enroll their children online at www.ferstreader.org by clicking “Register a Child.” Enrollment forms are also available at all Madison County libraries, daycare centers, and preschools, or by contacting a CAT member. Current team members include Bob Kaldenberg (Chair), Corey St. John (Treasurer), Sarah Simon (Secretary), Sandee Dawdy (Enrollment Chair), Pam Zivley, Ben Grabill, Joan Loftus, and Katie Downes. The CAT welcomes anyone interested in helping make Madison County the Most Literate County in Iowa.

Beautiful Rotary International float in the Tournament of Roses parade this morning with the theme Unite For Good … a great idea! Fellow Rotarians have worked on these floats in years past and say it is an amazing experience.
