The Ferst Readers of Madison County Community Action Team (CAT) is excited to announce an important achievement: since launching in October 2021 as Iowa’s first Ferst Readers nonprofit, more than 10,000 books have been distributed to children across Madison County. As of today, 320 children receive a Ferst Readers book each month, and the CAT’s goal is to increase that number to 400 by 2027. The CAT leads both child enrollment and the fundraising efforts that make this program possible.
Each month, every child residing in Madison County from birth until their fifth birthday can receive a free, age appropriate book. Books arrive addressed directly to the child and include a parent newsletter with vocabulary, questions, and activities that help families extend the story beyond the book.
Ferst Readers introduces books at the earliest stages of life. Reading regularly with a child from birth has a powerful impact on brain development. Children who are read to consistently have vocabularies three times larger by age five than those who are not, giving them a strong advantage when they begin school. These bookstore quality books explore numbers, colors, letters, concepts, animals, and more, encouraging conversation and connection between children and their families. Research shows that the strongest predictor of future academic success is the number of words a child hears and the amount of time adults spend actively engaging with them from birth to age three.
The program currently invests just over $1,100 each month to provide books to 320 children, funded entirely through the generosity of residents, civic groups, businesses, churches, and grants. You can find updates and community highlights on Facebook at facebook.com/FerstReadersMadisonCountyIowa
