Northwoods Land Trust is delighted to announce it will host a Paddle on the Gile Flowage event on Sunday, July 12 from 1-3:30 pm. The event will start at Spring Camp Landing.

This 3,400-acre flowage is located in Iron County and was created by a dam on the West Branch of the Montreal River. During the paddle, we will look at plants and animals we encounter, discuss federal licensing of the Gile Dam, and learn about some of the geological features of the area.

The event is open to everybody and is free to attend. Registration is required by going online to www.northwoodslandtrust.org and click on ‘News & Events’ to sign up, or by emailing Troy Walters at [email protected]. Please register by July 10, space is limited. Participants should expect to paddle 3+ miles and need to provide their own watercraft, paddles, PFD, snack and water.

Next week, our friends at North Lakeland Discovery Center will be taking participants out for a paddle at one of our conserved lands, Tillicum Conservation Area. With shoreline on three different under-developed lakes, this property is an excellent place for carry-in paddling. We will be portaging between two lakes on the property, Stone Lake and Ess lake, to view a variety of forest and bog habitats. We'll be there to tell the story of Tillicum Conservation Area and the uninque natural features it now protects. Spent the morning filming in the Holmboe Conifer Forest again for a documentary project about the Northwoods Land Trust and their efforts to preserve this beautiful landscape.

Part of how they preserve it is by enlisting volunteers to help remove invasive species that threaten the ecosystem. Thanks to the folks who braved the mosquitos and muddy bogs to keep Holmboe healthy!

Just one more week to register for our Spring Volunteer Day at Holmboe. This incredible State Natural Area hosts numerous cool plants and animals, and has a trail system that helps get you to different parts of the property. Oh - and it also has old-growth hemlock forest, an exceedingly rare habitat in the Northwoods, just minutes from the heart of Rhinelander. Volunteers help NWLT clean up the trails and keep invasive plants in check each spring so that Holmboe remains a sanctuary for all to enjoy. At our annual meeting this year, we're celebrating 25 years of conservation success! This event will look a bit different than in years past, with an extra long social from 2pm - 4pm at Nicolet College's Lakeside Center, which will include live music and food. Come earlier to attend an abbreviated business meeting where we will share about recent success stories, and stay for the social to reflect and celebrate.

If you only want to join us for the social, registration is not needed. Come and go as you can.

Recently we learned of the passing of conservation land donor Ed Marshall. In 2016, Ed gifted what is now known as Marshall Wildlife Conservation Area. This 90+ acre property protects an abundance of natural shoreline, woodlands, and wildlife habitat. A 1.5 miles long trail system which Ed created, and we now maintain, winds through a variety of beautiful and classic Northwoods scenery. Ed still visited the conservation area frequently after he donated it to NWLT, and he invited others to as well. Today, the land remains open to the public for year-round silent sports recreation. Ed's legacy will live on through his gift to the Northwoods community, for present and future generations to appreciate. Thank you, Ed.
